She ran through the thick trees. Sticks and rocks stabbed at her feet but she hardly noticed. Fear made her body pump adrenaline through her veins. There had to be a way out. Another door or something. Smack! What had looked like a continuation of the land was actually a wall. She ran into it face first and fell backward. She rubbed a hand over bruised nose and winced. She couldn't stay. Willa picked herself up and ran alongside the wall, her fingers touching it in case there was a door. It seemed to be forever until she came to the next wall. Still nothing. Her legs were getting shaky and tired. Lactic acid built up in her muscles and burned. Willa's breath was coming out ragged and she felt she might throw up again. Turning away from the walls she headed back into the forest. As her ancient ancestors had done before, she found a tree and climbed up into the foliage. She hoped the thick green leaves would hide her. At least for a while. Near the top, she clung to the trunk and tried to catch her breath. How long before he found her? What was he going to do? Slapping him had been a mistake. One she was sure she couldn't apologize for and let bygones be bygones. He would punish her. Use violence against her. He had already proven he could. Willa noticed her feet were torn up and bleeding. She would have trouble walking again. She couldn't run anymore.
