I get the rivalry actually as it's another dynamic that makes Animes all the more interesting to have someone outdoing another. 
But the overuse of it is just crazy.

The last "good" rivalry I feel was Goku and Vegeta. 
But that's just me.

Kakashi always fascinated me because he's gone through so much that it just makes him incredible interesting.
