Calluses and signs of manual labours are all but absent from his hands. Being now out of a physical school and thus the dress code associated with one, he has let his black hair grow past his forehead and down to his eyes without trimming. His height of eightscore and ten centimetres ([s]1.86 yards[/s] 5'7") is average, if a bit shorter than most of the male trainees at Taiyōtawa.
[sub]Personality[/sub]
Mika is a voracious reader and insatiable learner. Intellectually curious and thirsty not for girls (or boys for that matter) but more for knowledge, his consumption of texts, graphics, videos, and other formats on all sorts of matters, whether comprising ink or bits, outweighs that of food and drink. To strangers and acquaintances he is more often than not aloof and politely terse even under prodding. The act drops, however, as he grows in familiarity and warms up to them. While he becomes more chatty and lively, he also allows himself to be critical, especially in topics and fields in which he is well-versed. He is easily wounded and relatively unused to harsh feedback himself, a product of lifelong success and fulfilment. Humility and the taboo on hubris mean that he does not boast actively, but is more than willing to state his accomplishments if asked and enjoys showers of praise as much as anyone. Competitiveness has driven Mika's efforts starting from his preteen years, in admissions to schools and programmes, opportunities with limited slots, olympiads and contests, so on and so forth. While confident and self-accepting, willing to take a result falling short of his expectations (for both himself and others) without gnawing away at his morale, plain and persistent failure is difficult to tolerate. Radical and unusual lines of thought are things he stumbles upon frequently, questioning the information or situation he is presented with internally, but tends not to vocalise his ideas if the occasion does not warrant much concern, preferring to avoid rocking the boat if it isn't going to sink. This mentality leads to him being easily swayed and influenced by the opinions and discussions around him, especially those of authority and his peers.
[sub]Background Information[/sub]
Adam and Lilin did not make the decision to emigrate from their homes in Wise Rei-ettu-ng-hamsa rashly. Even as detached as the system was from the fronts and the Ascendant fleets, the degree-toting newcomers to the workforce found prospects for prosperity lacking, be it for themselves or their children. Soon, they were aboard an outward-bound spacecraft, bringing along belongings in rollaboards and cooing to their beloved newborn Kei, Mika's older sister. They were not alone: merely the vanguard of a system-wide brain drain induced exodus. Mika himself would be born a half-decade later into peace and harmony, with citizenship of his parents' homeland Wise as well as that of his birthplace. The family of four would pack their bags once more for work-related reasons by the time he could run, this time settling down for good. Unlike many others in Project Valkyrie, Mika had a stable childhood free of the typical skirmishes and incidents. Living on a neutral world sheltered him from the brunt of the crisis that struck mankind's cradle as well as the and the Confederacy's horrors of war and struggles of rebuilding. Money would never be a ceiling on his endeavours—his father's company was well in the black and his mother on a psychology tenure track; both engaged in the usual philanthropy and social work fashionable for the upper classes. He went to first-rate schools and received a well-rounded, quality education, topping his cohort with results in academics and cocurriculars. Social life was not sacrificed for grades and sleep - he made friends who he still stays in contact with. Even as both parents worked full time, they (as well as Kei) cleared up time on their schedules for nurturing and affection, frequently telecommuting as Mika watched on and listened to the grown-ups so they could be by his side. Life was contentful, his blessings numerous. So how did he end up as a teenage cadet-cum-soldier for the Confederacy's space MIT? Mika had just graduated from secondary school and was off visiting relatives in farspace. The first stop was of course Wise Rei-ettu-ng-hamsa. As they sat down for lunch at his uncle's, he ungracefully slipped on the stairs and knocked his head. Precaution prevailing, they took him for some scans at the hospital a while after. No abnormal structures or brain bleeds would be found, much to their relief, but his electrical activity displayed odd patterns. It was a visiting neurologist from Terra Nova who recognised the signs as pointing to Coordinator potential. Subsequent testing covertly verified that his Harmonic Wavelengths were compatible, and though the Seto family was told that day that it eventually turned out to be a harmless personal quirk, his records were off to the system government within the hour. See, the Wise government had always wanted Coordinators from their own citizenry to adorn the headlines and liven the reports, by hook or by crook. Insider trading scandals, creative accounting, and a slew of other practices had overwhelemed the PR machine and led to wavering trust in the incumbents, who were more than keen on a good national hero or somesuch to distract the populace. It just so happened that Mika had both Wise citizenship and an upbringing devoid of unsupportive family or daddy issues, let alone the traumatic tragedy and adversity many of his Confederate compatriots faced, keeping his neuroticism low—quite the fine candidate by their standards. Of course, being under the watchful eye of the Confederate government, Wise could not and would not pull out all the stops to get their first (and so far only) Coordinator. They started with a simple information letter, an invitation to apply with their backing, and a state scholarship offer. While Mika and his family were positively surprised by, he had his sights on other programmes in other institutions. An occupation with few viable alternative careers, prone to hazards to mind and limb, in service of what was to him a virtually alien country that had no qualms making 'heroes of the confederacy' and 'noble sacrifices' even out of its Coordinators, was also somewhat unappealing. Unsurprised, Wise began exercising its soft power to stack up sticks and carrots. Taxes and paperwork once designed to curb foreign corporate influence that were usually waived were now suddenly under reconsideration for his father's company. The grants and contracts that it was receiving were soon up for review as well, and the grapevine suggested that many of his associates and friends were going to have a hard time in the weeks to come. Meanwhile, rivals would continue enjoying their savings to the fullest. While this alone would not persuade, the family's position was further weakened by a series of coincidences and unfortunate trends. Word had been leaked to the media, and there were columnists and talk show hosts spinning their defiance as selfish communitarian parenting suppressing Mika's hopes and dreams. It made for believable enough news—after all, much of the faction's newest generation would indeed leap at the chance of entering Taiyōtawa, and the family's privacy and refusal to speak with reporters didn't help. The revelation that Adam and Lilin left their fatherland in the middle of the Ascendant-Confederate War further led to their branding as draft dodgers unfaithful to the ideals and principles of the Confederacy. Then came a crime wave, with burglary and extortion targeting homes and businesses of seemingly anyone bearing the Seto surname, as if bearing some grudge or strange obsession. The Wise government met the convenient rise in demand for security and offered military escort against space pirates and outlaws in addition to protection from the growing gangs and cartels for Mika's family and their interests. The back-breaking straw was the disappearance of his infant cousin. The child was in her crib at noon and gone a quarter-hour later. In her place, a ransom note demanding the parents' nephew (that is, Mika) be allowed to 'exercise his natural rights as a person, so as to decide independently and freely to enrol in Taiyōtawa Interstellar Piloting Academy'. Local police launched a manhunt, albeit with little manpower and stretched resources, while much of the extended family turned against Adam and Lilin. More defamatory articles and pieces began to pop up alongside calls for protective services among other extreme or even vigilante actions. As they were considered public figures by this point, coupled with extensive freedoms of speech and the burden of proof needed for a calumny case, little could be done in court in their defence. Throughout, the Seto family's lawyers and investigators could not link these less-than-fortuitous events to Wise. If they were even involved in instigating these at all, like the family thought (admittedly without empirical evidence), they had covered up their tracks well. Mika and his family discussed at length on the appropriate course of action. With the officials likely still keeping a few cards up their sleeves, they achieved a consensus after days of deliberation spurred on by Mika's decisions, and signed their consent shortly after. Mika filled up and turned in his application, and with his broad and excellent compatibility and emotional stability (as well as his absolute refusal to becme a Tactical Coordinator for the role's powerful downsides) he gained acceptance into the project division of the academy as a Physical Coordinator easily. His cousin was found asleep and unmolested at the doorstep of a police post the same day. The police investigation ran dry on leads soon after, and the case went cold. The press were quick to dress the concession up with planetary pride and champion it as a triumph of youth liberation, declaring Mika the youngest Wisean admitted to Taiyōtawa and the first local (soon-to-be) pilot. This has come with expectations on his performance. While allowed to undertake his own academic studies via distance learning in his personal free time, he was and is required to excel as a pilot and a student, representing and bringing glory and honour to his Confederate 'homeworld'. That was three months ago. Learning the ropes of piloting has been quite the arduous task so far, lacking in previous experience and skill as Mika is, but synchronisation has so far been one of the easier aspects of the whole process, despite its esoteric and nonabsolute nature. His more book-based classes have been fair, studying skills and discipline from the years of schooling having proven useful.
