In her liquid form, Thresher is immune to most kinetic attacks, which simply go right through her. However, very powerful kinetic attacks will knock her over. She can flow through small openings, up pipes and even spread herself along the floor or absorbent ground for an ambush. Thresher has extremely fine control over her transformation and can selectively turn parts of her body into “hard water” with a material strength close to that of steel. In human form she can form simple objects such as blades or hammers. When combined with an ability to stretch her body to about 100 yards she can grab, grapple, engulf, or physically hit targets at a distance. She is also capable of lifting around 10 tons. Thresher has trained to hit targets with blasts or waves of water, At low strength, she can knock over people with little harm. At high strength, her blasts are powerful enough to dent and move a small car. However, she can only fire a few blasts before depleting the water that makes up her body. She can replenish and regenerate as long as she is in contact with significant supples of water such as from water pipes. In a body of water, Thresher is far more powerful. She can quickly heal from wounds, and can control large amounts of water to control currents, form huge waves, hard water arms, etc. She can sense objects within a 100 yard radius and accurately target them. She is also effectively invisible, and can swim at speeds approaching 100mph (85 knots). She has no need to breath or concern herself with water pressure. High heat and related energy attacks can boil her, which is extremely painful. High enough levels of heat can cause her to evaporate, at which point she starts to loose all molecular cohesion. Extreme cold and related attacks can cause Thresher to freeze, and she can be frozen solid. If hit with sand, dirt or related material, Thresher can be turned into mud. She can still function, but is effectively slowed to about half speed until the material is purged from her body. Instead, she was later adopted by the same pararesueman, Sargent John Rodgers, and his wife Mary. They named the baby Miriam. Growing up in Portland, Miriam had a quiet childhood. She began to manifest increased physical abilities around the age of ten but her parents initially refused to make significant changes to her life. They felt that as long she was careful not to hurt others accidentally, especially her older brother James, they would be fine. This attitude quickly changed when Miriam hydrokenitic powers started to go out of control in her early teens. They sent her to the Titans Academy, where not only did she learn to control her abilities, but was able to make friends with other young metas, reducing the feelings of isolation she had back at home. She was still at the Academy when the horror of E-day struck. After the school was closed down as the teachers and administration left for the war, Miriam was sent back home to Portland. The city thankfully had beeb spared from attack, as it had no real military value. But her father had been federalized and deployed. For the rest of the war, Miriam stayed at home with her mother and brother, watching the war on TV and trying their best to live normal lives. Too young and ill trained, Miriam felt helpless and frustrated that all she could do was sit on the sidelines. Where the war finally ended Miriam and her family were overjoyed when Sgt. Rodgers returned home. He was physically fine, but needed psychological care for the PTSD he was suffering. Miriam was still able to attend UCLA that fall, deciding to major in civil engineering. She though that she could beat her feelings of helplessness by helping to rebuild the country after the war. She threw herself into her studies and campus social life, but the feeling of helplessness continued to nag at her. That was until a visit by Wonder Woman to campus inspired her to sign up as a Justice League reservist. Here was the thing Miriam realized she was missing, a chance to serve. Her mother was opposed to it at first, but her father was proud that his daughter was joining the League. It was not easy balancing the training, studying and what little social life remained. During one of her exercises she accidentally destroyed a small boat, being used as a target to gauge her control. When one of the instructors noted that the effects of her attack “was like a shark had ripped the boat apart,” the other students started to call her “Thresher” as a joke. Initially annoyed by the nickname, Miriam eventually grew to like it, and made it her code name when she graduated. She was assigned to the Los Angeles Hall of Justice where for the next few years she fought forest fires, rescued people, and captured low to medium threat criminals. These actions helped build up her skills and confidence, and were a welcome break from graduate school and work. However, as a reservist, she never had to deal with a major “Code Red” level threat, as they were usually assigned to the full-time team. She was also a bit uncertain that she wanted to, remembering her father’s PTSD.
