He hadn't been committed at first, and had decided before he even entered the forest that if it got too hard, too dangerous, or too dark he would go back home. Live another day and try again.

Maybe it was the fact that, as of yet, nothing had threatened him. Maybe it was that he [i]had[/i] found the signs of the White Stag, and giving up here would be like giving up on a tunnel when the ore vein you were looking for was just a few more swings of the pick away. Maybe he was overconfident. Maybe he was mad and not thinking clearly.

But he wasn't going to quit just yet.

Multiple tracks, signs of dragging, lots of movement. Antaeus would bet on a fight--two deer, locking horns, and pushing each other back and forth so that their hooves slid in the dirt. He didn't know if that was true and it didn't matter. It didn't even matter that he could probably track down another deer just as easily. 

[i]What, specifically, might the White Stag leave behind? What differentiates him from the rest?[/i] The boy narrowed his eyes and took one more look at the disturbed earth. He "listened" to it the same way he did in the mines--what stories could this soil and stone tell him?
