Ok...the idea I have will fit modern day, as long as you don't mind retaining the poor treatment of some of the circus animals, which unfortunately I still remember seeing. 

The concept I had was my character is a female werecat who is the circus' "big cat tamer," since she can speak to/command cats (among other things). She tries to take care of the circus cats who are otherwise trapped in cages all day, but she can't let them escape because they will be shot by the police as a threat to the public. She is just as trapped as they are, and she copes by going out and partying all night and basically being self-destructive. 

So, the whole thing is a tragedy in more ways than one.
