It has a rich history of pilgrims and settlers, fighting the bold Massachusetts winters. The town wasn't well known until just a couple decades ago, when a large car manufacturer built a factory nearby, providing jobs and lots of newcomers. Since then, the town has been slowly losing that quaint, village vibe. But with more traffic comes more trouble. On the outskirts of town, an old mansion houses a reclusive family. They don't mingle much, and seem to prefer to keep to themselves. This has been fine and dandy, and the people of Middleborough tend to mind their own. However, unknown to the vast majority of the population, this 'family' hides a secret. Vampires and humans have co-existed for the better part of Earth's history. Where vampires came from, no one is quite sure. Some would insists that they are of Satan himself. Others prefer less dramatic theories. However they came about, one thing is for sure: they are in a constant war with mankind over who should reside at the top of the food chain. At first glance, it would seem like a no brainer: vampires are long lived, strong, fast, and charismatic creatures. They feed off human blood, often draining a man dry until he either dies or becomes one of them. But humans are a force to be reckoned with. As long as there have vampires, there have been vampire hunters. In the early days, vampire hunters were all priests, specially trained by the church. The specific religion didn't seem to matter; the vampires withered on contact with anything holy. Over the years, the hunters have slowly gotten away from their religious roots as the churches slowly loss their power over the vast population. Of course, there are still some traditional hunters out there. Whoever they may be trained by, every hunter knows the vampires' weaknesses: sunlight burns their flesh, holy water is like acid to them, silver bullets embedded into their flesh slows their healing, and holy artifacts repel them. Vampires also have a few tricks up their sleeves. Any vampire can outmatch a human's strength and speed, with select individuals being even stronger or faster than the average. Most have a seemingly pleasant aura that allows them to easily draw victims to them, outside of those who are already suspicious of them. And, the older and most experienced vampires can even change forms, typically limited to that of a black bat, cat, or wolf. This level of experience usually comes at the five hundred year mark, which is a fairy remarkable age for a vampire to reach, regardless of their agelessness. For years, the coven in Middleborough has existed peacefully with their human neighbors. The family had suffered a major attack at the hands of hunters about a decade prior to their arrival. They lost their leader, about half their numbers, and their home. The clan wandered for a long time before deciding to settle in the town. They made an agreement with the local priest, a retired hunter, that they would only prey on animals and never harm the humans there. However, in recent weeks, bodies have begun to show up their blood drained. It would seem that some sort of blood sucking creature is to blame, and the vampires are the most obvious suspects. A group of hunters have begun to move in, ready to erase the coven off the face of the Earth for good. Can the true culprit be caught before the town of Middleborough erupts into war? These jems are typically made into a necklace and worn. The Middleborough coven has two: one that stays with the jead of house at all times, and one that is kept by the second in command and passed out as needed. Vampires are stronger, faster, and heal faster than humans. If a vampire drinks from a human with hepatitis a, b,c, sickle cell, HIV, AIDS, or any other bloodborn pathogen, they will experience 'vampire flu', which has the same symptoms of the human flu, but intensified over a 3 to 5 day period. Like the human flu, it can be fatal to the weaker vampires. Experienced vampires can shapeshift into wolves, bats, rats, or cats, typically black. This is around the 500 year mark. Once a vampire, the person can not be cured or changed back into a human.
