It's a very stripped down GTA in a very pretty western setting. The voice acting is stellar, some of the characters are great and the presentation is top tier. But why is it seen as a masterpiece? What is this game doing that no other game or no other rockstar game has achieved? The story really isn't that good, it's told very well and some of the characters are very interesting but the pacing has some massive problems and so much of the game feels like padding. Side content is almost non-existent, game-play is tight but fairly standard and the travelling is REALLY REALLY long and drawn out and boring, horse riding isn't fun enough to make traveling from town to town bearable on the 10th hour. RDR is a good enjoyable experience but in no fucking way is it a masterpiece. The sandbox style that rockstar created is a masterpiece but none of the individual games really achieve that.
