The flames from the fireplace illuminated the ornate library, casting shadows and perhaps images of the demons of the past on the walls; climbing higher and up to the ceiling. The crystals from the chandelier reflecting the light and projecting dark rainbows on the walls and portraits that hung on them. People from the past, people whom they had never known. "You are a curious one but I believe that I shan't be able to put you off any longer with your questions. Come here and let an old man tell you what my grandpa told me when I was just about your age." His voice was gentle but full of warning. It did not put the child off, it only made his eyes light up with the prospect that he might finally get an answer. Crime isn't as rampant here as most places out in the wilderness but that is simply because the Crown places most of the funds and gains of the world here. The crime rate is beyond imagining and there isn't a day that goes by someone isn't found dead in the streets. Wealth draws them because of the melding of the fridge north waters and the warmer southern ones creates an abundance of sea life and treasure not found in the rest of Rutas Mu. Thought not as crime ridden as other cities and town, it still has its fair share but things here are more orderly in their debauchery. A understanding that they are all each other has and they can't just run run off to another city quickly keeps much of the more maddening and perverse crimes at a minimal. Yet life here is harsh and only about 25% of the children born here ever reach their first birthday. Survival of the strongest. Long winters means months closed up with your neighbors and it isn't uncommon to find bodies defrosting in the snow come spring. People thought lost in a blizzard are found with rope marks around their neck; bodies perfectly preserved because of the snow. The main thing it has going for it is a lack of crime, the lowest in Rutas Mu but even that isn't enough to keep people wanting to live there. That and the fact that the royal guard trains there and likes to use law breakers as fodder for their training, with or without the Crowns endorsement. Those in larger cities will deal with a fair share just day to day and are less weary of new inventions. Some things that are available are listed below. Technology is not limited to these examples. If you are wondering if something particular is available, just ask. Never assume. Professor Von Batty's typically have the most advanced techs available and will usually either come across the newest or develop them out of driven need. That reason however sometimes cannot be explained, whether it is lack of knowledge or something more is up for debate. Is it something we just don't understand or is it more? Monsters or villains? Angels or heroes? Miracles or just the luck of the draw? We may never know, perhaps it is better if we don't. While knowledge is power, ignorance can be bliss. Things do go creep in the night and sometimes they get the better of your imagination. Listed below are the major stories characters in this RP would have grown up on. These are their [i]boogeymen[/i]. Many claim these are real, that they have themselves seen or encountered them. Others just say they are stories. If your character has partaken in any drug that causes hallucinations, chances are they have seen at least one of these and are probably going to claim they are as real as you or I. A brutal and primal driven creature that is overwhelmed with perverse desires. Extremely strong but just as charismatic. It is said even the most pure can fall to their whims. Others have claimed if they are not given what they desire they will take it by force. They enjoy playing twisted games, luring women and men out into the woods only to trap them and do as they will. It is said they were once your common man but that they succumbed to their perversity and instead of fighting it, embraced it. [*][color=rosybrown]Demonaic:[/color] A human looking creature with horrifyingly distorted facial features and body parts twisted into unnatural positions. Said to have once been a normal person, this being comes about when one desires to be controlled after being in an uncontrollable situation, such as being kidnapped or imprisoned. Some tales tell of people asking for the help of evil powers in exchange for their soul. What was once a person is now just a house for an evil entity. Yet once broken free evil never wishes to leave and the being remains, tormenting those when they least expect it. [*][color=rosybrown]Wyrm:[/color] Of all legends, there is always one of a large reptile like creature with wings that is as wise as it is old, who hoards gold, lives in mountains, breaths fire, and whose saliva drips with poison and acid. Such is the Wyrm. Many blame the vanishing of their past to this creature. Saying they were the embodiment of the heavens, coming down to the lands and taking over, removing knowledge and keeping it for themselves. It is said there were once many but they are gone now, no longer needing or wanting to watch us live. (Though some still believe at least one remains high up in the mountains, dormant, sleeping, and there in case we ever become too advanced once again.) [*][color=rosybrown]Ogre:[/color] When the remains of person is found out in the woods half eaten or mauled, it is said to be the work of an ogre. An eight foot tall being with a single eye that craves human flesh. Catching unsuspecting victims out long passed the light dimming in the sky. Some say we all come from the Ogre, that they are what we used to be but when we became civilized our size shrank as our brains grew. Some people who have been found still alive claim it was an Ogre that caught them and tried to eat them. These tales are told to children so many times to make sure they are too afraid to wander off alone. [*][color=rosybrown]Satyr:[/color] The embodiment of hedonism, these half-man/half-goat creatures lurk in forests, by streams, and on the borders of civilization. Playing their lutes or pipes to seduce any beautiful and unsuspecting victim, luring them away from the relative safety. Legend has it that they live in the dark places of civilized men and are said to be especially attracted to the virtuous. It is also said they are what lures the religious to temptation and causes their fall from grace. They love food and drink and are often drunk. [/list] [*] [color=rosybrown][b]Water[/b][/color][list] [*][color=rosybrown]Cecaelia:[/color] A frightful marine creature with eight tentacles that is over twenty feet long. Resembling an octopus, these creatures are said to be much larger and possessing high intelligence. Setting traps for ships or divers out in the water, catching them as food or just because they are curious. It is said the darkest waters are that way because of the ink that remains from a massive underwater attack by a Cecaelia. [*][color=rosybrown]Kraken:[/color] One does not simply release the Kraken! The terror of the cold seas. It is said to cause the sea to bubble and boil, to foam up and is the reason for the tides. It emerges from the deep with tentacles the size of a ships mast, wrapping around it, and dragging it down to the depths below to feast. Many washed up ships wreckage is blamed on the Kraken. Sailors driven mad out at sea that wash up with the wreckage claim to have seen them, looked into their eyes and known what that death is truly a living being. [*][color=rosybrown]Loch:[/color] A lake serpent said to be left over from a time long before the lost recorded history. Back when huge beings roamed, a creature that the gods kept as a pet and used the large fresh water lake of Rutas Mu as its home. Neither evil nor good, it is said that Loch just wants to live but defends its home if it is bothered. It is said to watch those on the shore from the safety of the water. Much of the time people will have claimed to see Loch but in the end it was nothing more than a floating piece of broken tree. [*][color=rosybrown]Sylph:[/color] A dangerous but enchanting creature that is half woman and half fish. A stunning woman with the scales and tail of a fish. Vain creatures who if insulted will kill, even if not insulted they might. Said to lure out lonely men by their voice and their beauty, pulling them down to the depth to just watch them drown. Sailors for as long as any can remember and probably long before that had said to have seen them swimming out in the ocean during long journeys or when caught in storms. From time to time it is said that a downing victim in lakes or rivers was lured by a Sylph after being spotted near the shore only to meet their death. [*][color=rosybrown]Tiamat:[/color] A monstrous serpent of the sea, measuring more than 150 feet in length that slips through the surfs as if it is gliding on air. Large fins help it cut through the hard currents. They are said to be a bad omen if spotted but most play off said sighting as nothing but a trick of the eye and a reflection of ropes in the water. Legend has it they are not aggressive but if hungry enough will approach a ship in search of food. Ships that have run aground are said to have been pushed by the Tiamat for fishing in water where the creature dwells. [/list] [*] [b][color=rosybrown]Air[/color][/b][list] [*][color=rosybrown]Imp:[/color] A minor creature of evil. A small and red human like creature that is roughly two feet in height. It has bat like wings, horns, grotesque facial features, and a tail with a stinger on the end. Only one at a time usually appears. Scheming little bugger who fly around and cause a lot of twisted mischief. They are said to be able to take the form of a black cat, black dog, a toad, or even a raven. Many people claim that when they do something wrong that they were under the influence and control of an Imp and that there was nothing they could do to stop themselves. [*][color=rosybrown]Phantom:[/color] A ghost who appears to look like a human person but then can go suddenly translucent and corpse like in appearance. They can appear one at a time or up to a hundred in the form of a mob. It is claimed that they can change what a person is seeing, showing them horrible events that have occurred. These visions can be rather terrifying and they are said to appear anywhere a great tragedy has occurred. [*][color=rosybrown]Spectral:[/color] Like a phantom, this is a ghost like creature but in the form of an animal. Appearing normally but turning transparent. They can take the forum of any creature but the most common that have claimed to be seen are that of typically kept pets and are said to form either because of a cruel death or because they still have to protect those that cared for them in life. Children have been known to claim that their favorite dog still plays with them and keeps the bad men at bay. Usually only one at a time is ever seen. [*][color=rosybrown]Wraith:[/color] An evil being with a hatred of the living. It takes the form of a wispy dark human with corpse like skin and an angry expression. Blinded by rage, they are said to be horrible to encounter, seeking revenge for their life. Most who have said to encountered these say it happens at a place of a horrid death, or at least that is what people suspect. Animals are said to rush away from a location if one is near and that they only appear during the night, seeking out someone to harm. Many a suicide has been blamed on these myths, people said to have been driven mad at the sight and fled for their lives only to fling themselves out a window or off a balcony to get away. The Fae are an example of this, appearing as stunningly beautiful young men or women in golden tunics and with wings like butterflies or dragonflies. Their feet never touch the ground and they are said to be able to change into the very thing of their wings. They love, laugh, and giggle. Though never harmful, they can be curious and mischievous. It has been said that many a lost children or person of pure heart has been saved from a horrid death because of them. Shadowell Forest is the eye of that storm. Like other storms, the eye of this one is calm. Too calm, and forbidden. Not be decree but by common sense. For as long as one can remember and before that, Shadowell has been a dark and dense forest where few dared to travel. A fog seems to roll through the trees and lash out at any and all that come near it. Some say a dark spirit resides in the heart of the forest. Dark figures, voids of light, shadow movements, a cold chill year round, vicious beasts with dripping fangs howl in the night. All of this and more has kept so many from wishing to enter. The stories of people entering and never returning is usually enough to keep the timid and common at bay. Only one family resides within Shadowell Forest: The Ambesires. An Upper Class family of eccentric renown. They own all of Shadowell Forest, as well as most of the farm lands surrounding it, and guard the grounds of their home fiercely. It is walled, gated, and guarded with a rather vicious team of servants. It is said that those that have been caught on the lands have never been seen again. No one currently living has stepped foot within the gates other than the Crown. Little is know of the family other than their vast holdings. No one outside of the crown deals with them directly even though they seem to have a hand in nearly all the larger cities and towns. When the Crown does deal with them, they come to the Ambesires, not the other way around. While most Upper crust families host events throughout the year the Ambesires never have in memory. At least not until now. There is to be a ball that will be held in Shadowell, the first. Families through out Rutas Mu watch for messengers in hopes of attaining the rare invitation. An event that has never occurred, in a place few dare enter, in a home only the royal family has laid eyes on? Oh yes, this will be an event to be remembered for centuries to come. More than that, it plays into their personality: Perversity. It defines the extent of their mental and moral corruption. Unlike the basic six abilities a low or high score does not mean they are good or bad at something. It means they are good or evil. This is your alignment in a sense and it comes into play heavily with a characters personality, what choices they will make during normal circumstances and even more-so during duress.[/i][/indent][/indent] [hider=Breakdown of Perversity] [list][*] It is rated from 1 to 20. [*] The human average is 9, while scores below three or above 18 are extremely rare. [b][color=rosybrown]Evil Eye:[/color][/b] The ability to inflict the "Evil Eye" (a curse) on someone. It can only be used on someone that has materially/physically/emotionally harmed the Bohemian. The Evil Eye will inflict an ~unlucky~ streak on the person until the Evil Eye is removed by the original Bohemian or one of higher level. It may be used 1 time per chapter from levels 1-4, twice per chapter levels 5-9, four times starting at level 10. If the seduction fails, the "victim" will thereafter regard the Rake negatively. May re-Seduce or retry to Seduce a single character after 30 days. (Cannot Seduce PC's) [/hider] [hider=Professor Von Batty] [b][color=rosybrown]Academic Credentials:[/color][/b] Even though this character is bat shit crazy, they do have an education of the highest level. This will allow nearly instant access to all Universities, Libraries, and other places of knowledge. It will also grant them access to to Forbidden Books and Historical Locations with little to no question that other characters would be Forbidden to enter. As well as being able to use items in facilities of learning or knowledge without a fee. [b][color=rosybrown]Mad Inventions:[/color][/b] A Mad Invention is an item of strange science, similar to what a talisman would be thought of for a magician. Every level, including starting, a Mad Scientist either gains a new Mad Invention or a new Devoted Servant, but never both. The Player must specify what form a Mad Invention takes – a gun, a box filled with strange gear-work, a drug, a helmet, etc. The form should be appropriate to the effect. A Mad Invention may be used as many times a chapter equal to the characters level before breaking and needing repair. The Mad Invention only works for the Von Batty and never for anyone else. New Mad Inventions are assumed to be created between chapters and the number of Mad Inventions a Von Batty has may never exceed the characters Von Batty Level. All Mad Inventions are assumed to be fixed between chapters as long as the Von Batty can visit their laboratory. (List of Available Mad Inventions in Appendixes) [b][color=rosybrown]Laboratory:[/color][/b] Character either owns or has access to a proper Lab. It could be in their home or elsewhere. Even if there is no sleeping quarters, most down time will be spent here. Von Batty prefers their lab to be set up in a dramatic setting: tower of a dark castle, secret part of the sewers, a false wall of their home, in a cave, beneath a volcano, etc. If a Von Batty loses access to their Lab they will be unable to create or fix Mad Inventions or gain new Devoted Servants. Establishing a new Lab will cost 1,000§ per level of the character. [b][color=rosybrown]Scientific Knowledge:[/color][/b] Although insane, Von Batty will possess a vast knowledge in many fields including but not limited to Mathematics, Medicine, Biology, Astronomy, Geology, Optics, Metallurgy, and Physics. +1 on ALL Intelligence Checks of a Scientific Nature to recall a useful bit of information. +1 to All Intelligence Checks to solve complex mathematical problems. +1 to ALL Intelligence Checks to properly identify natural substances and materials. [b][color=rosybrown]Devoted Servants:[/color][/b] A Devoted Servant is a henchman or slave that serves the Von Batty. Every Level, including starting, Von Batty may chose to gain either a Devoted Servant or a Mad Invention but never both. The Devoted Servant can be of any Intelligence inferior to the Von Batty's. Most Devoted servants are human freaks, shunned by society for their grotesque appearance and are loyal to the Von Batty because they are provided shelter and protection, they are effectively brain washed because of this. They will do ANYTHING a Von Batty asks of them unless it is obviously suicidal or against their nature. If it comes to this a Von Batty may call for a check between their Charisma and their servants with a +1 Bonus. If they win the check, the Devoted Servant does it without question. If they fail, the Devoted Servant breaks free of the brain washing, rebelling and running away. Devoted servants will serve their Von Batty until death takes them or they rebel. A Von Batty can never have more Devoted Servants than their Von Batty Level. [/hider] [hider=Purity] [b][color=rosybrown]Resist Evil Influence:[/color][/b] +1 to All Ability Checks against Charm, Evil Intentions, Suggestion, and Perversity. +1 to Charisma Checks against Seduction. [b][color=rosybrown]Grace Of The Heavens:[/color][/b] At the beginning of every chapter, a Purity receives 1 point per level of Grace Points. Grace points can be used to re-roll any basic abilities check or damage roll. Cannot re-roll their own checks. May use Grace points to help Allies in need or obstruct those that could harm them. Grace points replenish at the start of every chapter. (Grace of the Heavens may even be used when the character has fainted.) [b][color=rosybrown]Inspirations of the Virtuous:[/color][/b] All characters with a perversity score of 12 or below receive a +1 Bonus on all Ability Checks as long as they have the Purity within their line of sight. Bonus applies even if the Purity has fainted, is asleep, or otherwise unconscious. Bonuses are not combined if there is more than one Purity around and a Purity may never use the bonus for themselves unless they are looking at another Purity. [b][color=rosybrown]Redemption:[/color][/b] Those who spend a full day in the presence of a Purity may voluntarily reduce their Perversity by 1 point. (This is their choice and they can refuse the reduction if they so chose, or are required to retain a certain level of Perversity.) A Purity cannot reduce their own Perversity but they can get a reduction if they are in the presence of another Purity. (Full day, leaving their side for any amount of time negates it, hope you don't have to pee.) Faith need not be religious, it can just be in humanity, the persons own goodness, etc. This can be used against injury, unconsciousness, poisoning, bad luck, etc. Cannot be used against the Evil Eye. Purity must touch the target for Faith to be effective. A roll is made with a +1 Bonus against the Purity's Perversity level, a success is any roll that is above the characters Perversity Level. They could pursue the Outlaw, blackmail them, post wanted posters, hire bounty hunters, question associates, etc. This Penalty compounds over the months and an area is defined as anything that can journeyed by horse or sail in 1 days time. This means that your name might be given to authorities during an interrogation, a favor might be called in that you cannot refuse, or a dangerous job must be taken to keep your secrets. Outside of your clients, small circle of friends, and criminal underworld you must always keep your vocation a secret. Penalties for tomb raiding a severe, including execution. You are subject to discriminatory laws, unjust abuse, and are assumed to cheat everyone at every turn. They will come to you like a moth to a flame. Their intentions are never pure and all Perverse will receive a +1 Bonus on Ability Checks when attempting anything in your direction personally. While other characters who are in love can receive a +3 Bonus on Ability Checks to protect their love, a Rake will never have this. A Rake also will lose interest in a lover in 1d8 weeks after the initial ~bedding~, no matter how strong the attachment might have initially been. If a Rake encounters a character with a Perversity below 6 or a Charisma above 12 they will become instantly obsessed with corrupting them. They will want to be around them as much as possible and will do everything in their power to sully their virtue or have them engage in a criminal behavior. They will try to corrupt the moral by showing them how happy they could be if they just followed their desires. They will try to engage innocents in the most disgusting and depraved acts. For every month you are in an area there is a 1 in 20 chance an Angry Mob will form to try to kill you or force you into exile. The Angry Mob will not listen to reason and there is nothing that can stop them besides their death, your death, or you leaving the area. [b][color=rosybrown]Incurable Madness (Chose 1):[/color][/b] Every Von Batty suffers from some kind of mental disorder. This Incurable Madness inflicts them no matter their Perversity. The Insanity is both a debility and a likely source of their genius. You must specify what type of Madness your character has at creation. It can be OCD, BiPolar, another known disease of Madness, or one you create on your own with GM discretion. The Von Batty could be obsessed with trying to recreate a lost love or even specific bodily functions. Whatever the Madness, it must be one the Rper can RP properly! If the Von Batty hears voices, those voices will be controlled by the GM and must be reacted to by the character as if they are real. [/hider] [hider=Purity] [b][color=rosybrown]Fainting:[/color][/b] When a Purity encounters anything horrible they are bound to faint. This can be an ugly person, a scary beast, or any frightening scene. They must make a Save against Charisma with a -1 Penalty or faint for 1d4 rounds. They only faint once per scene or encounter of person/beast. Yet if they are removed from the situation and then reintroduced, they must make the save again. [b][color=rosybrown]Misfortune Of Virtue:[/color][/b] If something bad is going to happen, it will most likely happen to the Purity first. If there is an attack, they are first to get injured. If there is a kidnapping, they are the first target or mistaken for the target. If there is a chance for a Purity to fall into trouble, it will happen. A Purity will always fail any checks to notice a trap or to know when danger is around. If there is a trap, a Purity will always trigger it. Misfortune is drawn to them. From this all I ask is that you act accordingly. If your character is Upper Class chances are they have everything they need, but may not carry many weapons on them at all times. Sure they may have access to them but why carry three different guns when you have servants. When you are upper crust money provides others to take a bullet doesn't it? Carrying so much would just get in the way of your fashion and attitude. Lower class people are not going to have finery, maybe a single heirloom but even that is most likely just a worthless trinket and only holds sentimental value. They would though be more likely to have a knife on them just in case. Middle class would be in the center. Remember when in this RP no member of a Class may own land unless they are Upper. It is just how Rutas Mu works. Now as far as your equipment goes, use this section to put what they would normally have on them. Day to day. Your typical stuff. Seriously I will shoot down anyone outside of an appropriate Echelon that is carrying more than two weapons on them. I will assume that if your character is coming they are packing what they need for the time. These spaces are limited to what is available already on the CS and they are mostly just for reference to give an idea. I would suggest however that anything special of note is listed here as well. If it is not going to be on your character but is in a trunk - simply list out the trunk and then in in the places below list the items of note that will be held in the trunk with an * by them. Perhaps books, love letters, portrait of your family, an heirloom, etc. Please be aware that there will be certain times in the Rp it may be needed that we need exact lists. We will address those times when they come. Otherwise it will be assumed your character has everything they need on them. If the Gm says it isn't something you have, you don't unless it is specifically listed. Even then it could have been lost or stolen and your character just didn't realize it until it was pointed out. I would suggest thinking on this for a bit and working out the details in your mind before you commit to a reason why your character is being extorted. You are going to want it to make sense with your characters personality, their background, their social status, and history. Also, if your character is already a villain type, many crimes they wouldn't care if they were caught. Hell for some it might even enhance their ~status~ so chose wisely. If it doesn't make sense, it won't be accepted. Examples include adultery, apostasy, arson, assassination, assault, bestiality, bigamy, blackmail, buggery, bribery, drugs, dueling, embezzlement, fornication, fraud, gambling, homicide, incest, kidnapping, larceny, perjury, prostitution, rape, robbery, smuggling, sodomy, and tax evasion just to name a few!
