Also double-posting to give my two cents. The Chinese didn't really have a navy, and the ships they did have were those (like you said) were usually hand-me-downs from other nations. After the Japanese started to invade China, a lot of these ships were sunk (some were later raised by the Japanese as ships for their own war effort), or integrated into other navies. Once WW2 ended, they still continued to receive hand-me-downs like plenty other nations (I know the Greeks got a couple US destroyers like [url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Ringgold_(DD-500)]this one[/url]).
