“Babe it’s a pool party. I'm supposed to look hot!” Jason defended himself. He stood in his room, holding shorts in front of him before a massive mirror. His girl could be a little overbearing sometimes. But that’s just because she didn’t trust anyone at King Academy. For good reason though. Jason told her enough stories. “I promise I’ll wear a shirt.” “Nope, not good enough. I forbid you from going!” she said with her playful voice. “I’m kidding. Of course. I just wish I was there with you. You know. Besides I hear Florida parties are like a thousand times more awesome than New York ones." Jason threw the red short in his bag and dropped on his bed in front of the laptop. “Maybe you could come here next break. I'd organise a pool party just for you." Which wasn't a bluff. Especially as he had a rather big swimming pool and outdoor bar. "Maybe we could celebrate New Year over here then!" His girl smiled. “I just miss you.” “I miss you too. And I love you! But I have to go! I’ll call you!” He said, without skipping a beat. Yes, he loved her. It was one of the certainties he had in life. He loved Catherine. He threw her a quick kiss before he closed his laptop. He didn’t have much time anymore.
Jason tried to sneak downstairs and get through the front door. He didn’t really need to sneak. His mother wasn’t home. But he still did it, in the off chance she was. No way she’d let him go to the party. Not a Santiago party at least. He thought he was victorious when he found his keys in the kitchen and managed to reach the front door. Which promptly swung open and his mother stepped through. She cast one look at Jason standing before her with keys and bag in. “I’ll have to call you back.” Which was never a good thing to hear. “So where do you think you’re going?” Jason swallowed hard. “Small party?” His mom just shook her head. “You’re not going.” “Wait what!?” His mom didn’t even turn around: “You heard me. You’re not going. You think I’m stupid? I know what’s going to happen. It starts with a shot and the next thing I know I’m a grandmother! No.” Jason chased her into the kitchen where she put down her bags. “You and I both know that’s not going to happen! C’mon mom, the entire school is going. Even the nerds!” His mother still didn’t look at her son as she pulled some papers out of the bag. “You’re not going.” But Jason wouldn’t let it go: “Mom! You can’t just expect me to-“ “Quiet!” She snapped. “I am expecting you to stay home! I will not let you embarrass this family by going partying like some delinquent! And that’s that.” She said as she dropped her papers and held both of her hands on the table. She looked so tired. Tired and angry. Jason looked at his mother for a moment. Showing real pain in his face. She knew how much the respect of the family meant to him. She knew! Yet she just threw it out there. She never had to tell him to go to his room. He just did. But Jason wasn’t about to just sit on his fate. No, once in his room he crawled out of the window and looked down. Grass. Long grass. ‘It’s not going to hurt. C’mon you can do it. You can do it!’ he thought to himself. With one push off the windowsill, he fell down and completely forgot to roll it out. Instead, his legs took the full force of the fall and he dropped down against the ground, squirming in pain for a second. “Mother-“ he shouted out, stopping himself with all the willpower he had. If his mom found him now he’d be burned for a month. So stiffening the pain he slowly crouched towards the road. One Uber order later and he was heading towards the party. The pain in his legs vanished after he popped one of Santiago’s painkillers. Sure it wasn’t the healthiest thing but who cares!? He was young and free! Before he did anything else (even drinking) he quickly went to the bathroom to change. True to his girlfriend’s wishes he put on the plain, slightly oversized shirt. After that, he began to look for Santiago. He couldn’t just start partying without saying hi to his friend and host now, could he? Yet as he walked over to Santiago, in the corner of his eyes he caught a glimpse of a raven-haired girl. Before he knew it he turned slightly to get a better view. He saw Victoire going straight for the bar. Though another thought shot through his mind. A though he quickly branded wrong and tried to exorcise. It worked, partially. There was still that tiny little voice in the back of his head and Jason was very aware of it. Well, if he couldn't banish the thoughts. Maybe he could drown it. So he followed Victoire, went straight for the bar and poured himself two tequila shots.
