By the time he was born, Rome held ownership of Germany. All German knights fought on behalf of the Holy Emperor Maximilian I, and Gotz himself was no exception. He entered under the command of Frederick I, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach, and spent nearly every day of the next two years fighting and struggling to survive. However, by the year 1500, he left Frederick's employ, deciding instead to form his own mercenary band, leading a group of extremely skilled warriors and selling their talents to the highest bidder. For four years it was like this, changing leaders and storming battlefields, with Gotz at the head of every charge. The enemies were plentiful, and he and his men got plenty of experience against all manner of combatant. In 1504 he was serving the Duke of Bavaria, Albert IV, defending the town of Landshut against siege when his position came under a massive amount of artillery fire. During the blasts, Gotz sustained many wounds, culminating in the loss of his right hand. However, the battlefield had not seen the end of him. He commissioned a replacement, a prosthesis made of iron, one that was extremely durable and powerful. Gotz became so skilled with the arm that he eventually regained even his ability to write with it. Between now and 1518, he had run several missions, including strikes against Nuremberg merchants and even kidnapping and ransoming the Count of Waldeck, Philip IV. This resulted in him frequently being placed under Imperial Ban, which entailed having his human rights stripped completely away. However, he never managed to stay under ban. He would later be captured after ordering his men to surrender against overwhelming odds, but he himself staying on the field of battle. His next adventure was in the German Peasant's War, where he led a rebel army against the Ecclesiastical Princes of the Holy Roman Empire. However, the downfall of this army was the fact that he only had the loyalty of the men who'd fought with him in the past. The other men were unruly, of little skill, and had issues with following orders. As more and more men were lost, those closest to him convinced him to go home and wait out the doomed rebellion in peace. In light of his excellent service and status as a symbol, he was acquitted of all charges placed on him for leading the rebellion. However, this had been a trick, and he was instead captured and imprisoned by the Swabian League. For two years he was a prisoner, forced to fight for his life without his sword or his arm. However, he was freed when the prison came under attack from a Roman force, led by his oldest and closest friends. He spent the next ten years serving under Charles V, Emperor of Rome, battling against both the Ottoman Empire of Suleyman the Magnificent as well as Francis I of France. After spending forty-seven years in combat, he died in the peace of his home, leaving behind ten children, three daughters and seven sons, to carry on his name. Gotz was ferocious, brave, and a little insubordinate, and is credited with coining the phrase "kiss my ass." He charged ahead without waiting for order or command, confident in his own abilities as a warrior. However, to his love, his children, and the men who served him, he was unfalteringly loyal, willing to dive into Hell itself for them. When his brothers in arms became oppressed, tread upon by the lavish and bloated Romans, he led the rebellion against them, his Iron Hand a stand-in for the strength and pride of Germany. He was brash and wise, wild and tempered, cunning and kind. He dedicated himself to fighting the enemies of his country, no matter who that may be, and in the end, died with only one wish on his lips. The wish to undo some of his decisions, to keep fighting and die on the battlefield, rather than allow himself to be talked into retreating and dying in a soft bed. He wanted the same end as his brothers in arms, and to fight until that end. Gotz is tall, lean, and muscular, with pale skin, blue eyes, and hair as white as snow. He wears an officer's coat that has been fitted with steel plates on the back and shoulders, leather trousers, and armored boots. He carries a single-edged sword and his signature Iron Hand as weapons.
