A secret he was none too proud to have. Annice Leontine, one of Lieutenant Byford's maids, also had a secret. Their secretโ€ฆ was a child named Visia. The girl, a product of the pair's gloriously scandalous affair, could've lived a life of luxury. Unfortunately for her, Aldridge couldn't risk losing both his job and wife. So, he was forced to fire the mother Annice, who also had to take the child with her. Annice (who, in an attempt to further distance herself from her former life, changed her last name to Chapman. She also gave Visia the same last name.) and her daughter Visia now lived a low-income life. It was quite the dramatic lifestyle change for Annice and took her some time to get used to. She was partly thankful Visia didn't have to experience such a thing, though Annice never stopped worrying about whether or not she'd have enough money to provide for Visia and herself. The child Visia didn't seem to care. Even as she grew, nothing ever seemed to dampen her determined and optimistic spirit, though she would fake it at times for her mother's sake. Miraculously, they both were able to get by with no help from Byford. That was until Visia turned fourteen. The Lieutenant visited Annice at her house in the night, alone and bearing a gift for the child. Annice reluctantly let the man, that she had called many a rude name in the past, into her home. There, they discussed in private what his gift was. Annice was highly against it. Aldridge tried his best to convince the woman that his gift was perfect for Visia. For you see, his gift was fourteen-thousand dollars to spend towards Madam Geraldine's Finishing School for Young Ladies of Quality. A school Visia was now the right age to go to. Aldridge and Annice took an extended period of time deliberating over this but eventually, Annice agreed to let Visia go to the school. She would tell her child in the morning. Little did she know, Visia was awake at the time her parents were discussing the matter (though thanks to what Byford was wearing, Visia was unable to really see the mystery man's face and was only able to hear a hushed version of his voice). Visia was in shock. She had never left home before and she didn't really want to start that now. Holding back all the tears she felt that night, she went back to her room and silently cried herself to sleep. The very next morning when he mother came to tell her the news, Visia was able to put on a good front. Annice still had no idea Visia eavesdropped on her and Aldridge's conversation. In fact, Visia started to cry once again when Annice delivered the news (looking back on this day, Visia is very thankful she felt so sad over the situation that she unintentionally cried. It certainly helped her deceive her own mother, though she does feel some guilt over that). Visia was able to semi-come to terms with the whole ordeal. Fewer tears were shed the day she was actually sent off to Geraldine's, though she could tell her mother was holding them back. Visia was as well. During her time at Geraldine's, determined Visia was skilled with many of the subjects there and impressed many teachers. She was q natural fighter throughout all of her school years (and occasionally got into few when not in class) though she was best when in the air. Visia was one of the best pilots at Geraldine's and always excelled at anything flying related. When she wasn't flying or studying flying, she was fixing something related to flying. Engineering became a second love for her. She spent a lot of her free time fixing and building flight machines. After graduating, she applied to the Airborn Peacekeeping Force and was accepted. Her skill as a pilot and engineer have earned her the respect of her fellow Airborn Peacekeepers, as well as fear from certain members of the Force (she can be quite intense). ๐ŸŽ€๐“ž๐“ฝ๐“ฑ๐“ฎ๐“ป โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€• Likes: A good fight, alcohol, collecting rocks and gems Dislikes: Dishonest and disloyal people, failing, dresses Weaknesses: Alcohol, bladed fan dueling, fighting in a dress, seducing someone for the sake of retrieving information (she'd rather just knock 'em out and interrogate them). A wealthy family well-known among other fellow nobles, the Van Luthens were part of the Merchant Guild and were responsible for trading with other societies. They traveled far and wide and made trade deals with other nobles. It made them quite the fortune. It also made enemies. No one knows how Medwin and Elmira died. Some suspect it was a member of House Ristel in the far East. Tensions have always been high between them and the Merchant Guild. The Van Luthens, in particular, didn't have any favor for the house. Perhaps a trade dealing went awry and Ristel sent one of their special assassins. No one knows for sure, though. All anyone knows is that their bodies were found in a field several months after they should've been back home from another trade deal. Goodness knows how traumatic of an experience this must've been for poor, seven-year-old Penelope. She now had no parents. The only two people in the world that loved her more than anything were dead. Sure, the housekeeping staff would take care of her, and they did, but it just wasn't the same. While she didn't try to completely hide her emotions from the staff, she did save all of the crying for late at night when she was alone in her room. It seemed like Penelope would live this lonely life for the rest of her long days until someone very special came along. The infamous Robert Sullivan came to young Penelope's aid. Turned out he was a distant relative of the Van Luthens. When asked why he had come to take care of the girl, he explained that once he heard the news of Medwin and Elmira's death, he knew he had to come help Penelope. There were no other relatives able to help at that time except him. He was very close with Medwin and Elmira. Robert said that Medwin considered him to be the brother he never had. He expressed sadness over the fact he wasn't able to be in their and Penelope's lives more often. He also wished he could've said goodbye. But the past is in the past and there is nothing Robert can do nowโ€ฆ except take care of Penelope as his own personal way of saying goodbye to the late Medwin and Elmira Van Luthen. So, after Penelope packed all her things and said a tearful goodbye to the staff of the Van Luthen estate, Robert took the girl to his own home. There, Robert raised Penelope (whom he'd soon bestow her the nick-name of Pepper). He'd constantly remind her of how he saved her. Saved her from "eventual poverty", from "greedy, backstabbing nobles", and from many other terrible things. He seemed to have saved her from something new each day and Pepper never, ever let herself forget it. Robert also taught Pepper many skills, as well as introduced her to the world of industrial espionage. Being the innocent and ignorant girl she was, Penelope did whatever Robert told her to do, even if that meant stealing precious technology. When Pepper turned fourteen, Robert sent her to Madame Geraldine's school for Gifted. Penelope was familiar with many of the subjects there, thanks to Robert, but the teachers at Geraldine's finally helped her truly excel. Penelope had a special love for potion making, which was something not even Robert taught her anything about. She enjoyed making healing potions but forced herself to focus on making poisons since that's what Robert told her to do. He also told her to work on her weapon-making skills and her offensive fighting abilities, which is what she did. Aside from the classes she was required to take, all of the additional classes you could choose to take were ones Robert asked Pepper to attend. Because of this, Pepper often found herself questioning the man as well as her loyalties to him. She'd immediately feel guilty for having these thoughts, though, and punished herself for them. Her arms made contact with a knife she made for far too many nights, however, thanks to her potions, she rarely even felt the pain. While she as Geraldine's, Penelope met someone. A girl named Visia. They bonded quickly and became very close friends. Throughout their time at Geraldine's, they only had each other and nobody else. Despite the closeness of their relationship, Pepper never let Visia know what she did for Robert. He always made it very clear to Penelope that she was to never tell anyone about her special missions. Many times, Pepper felt upset that she couldn't tell Visia those secrets but she also suspected Visia was keeping secrets of her. Because of that, Pepper felt a little better about keeping those things from the girl. After graduating from Madame Geraldine's, Pepper continued her industrial espionage work for Robert. Whenever she had the time, she would help at a local potion-making shop. Unfortunately, she never gets to do that as often as she wants to. Penelope also drifted apart from Visia after graduating. She has no idea where the girl is or what she's doing but she hopes to one day see Vis again. ๐ŸŽ€๐“ž๐“ฝ๐“ฑ๐“ฎ๐“ป โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€•โ€• Likes: Reading, music, animals, making potions (especially healing potions) Dislikes: Violence (especially of the unnecessary variety), being forced to fight, making weapons (despite being so skilled at it) Weaknesses: Hand-to-hand combat, traditional fencing, flying [/hider]
