What he likes, he does with dogged determination. Everything else is pointless. The man is stubborn, rude, often obnoxious, and usually would rather be left alone to get drunk and ponder life's mysteries like, "Why aren't I dead yet?" or, "If I stare at this TV long enough, is a game actually going to come on?" He is a pessimist who views humanity as a series of individuals that would just as soon stab you in the face as lend you a hand, and has rarely come away from that assumption about people surprised (and that was before the Apocalypse). Maybe he was a cop too long. Maybe his own personal tragedies have permanently colored him a darker shade of who he once was. But truly? He doesn't really remember being happy. Not since he lost his family. The man he was is still there. He was a Sheriff, and a decent, hands-on Sheriff at that. Limited resources and lack of staffing meant that he had to get damned creative and take care of a lot of beat cop work himself, mostly in and around his hometown of Willard's Mill. Hank is a good man. Much of his personality is buried behind various psychological defense mechanisms, but it's a funny thing about masks like that: You wear it long enough, it becomes who you are. Much as he would have loved to be up in the middle of it all, and at that time hopefully getting his intestines ripped out through his nose, this was purely a spectator event. It's funny, when you think you see dead people, specifically your dead friends and family, staring down the real thing is an altering event. Makes sense that it should all become clear in an asylum. Healing Power of Death, or whatever. Naturally, as all the other patients and the doctors and well, everybody knew, Hank was the cop that saw dead people, so... No one paid him any mind until it started happening inside of the hospital proper. Too late then. Probably too late before, so, no harm no foul, right? He was sure that guy the dead ones attacked wound up okay anyway. If he was lying to himself. History Before Outbreak: Before the Outbreak, Hank was part of the New Hampshire Sheriff's Department. It was Police Academy or Army, and he wasn't about to throw a salute at their present Commander-In-Chief so, no sir, cop it was. His work kept him close to his hometown of Willard's Mill, as it turned out, and allowed him to put down some decent roots. Married, had a daughter, even ran for High Sheriff and nailed it at a landslide. Hank had a decent life. For a time, anyway. Hank's wife had an undiagnosed heart defect that led to an attack while she was picking up their little girl from school. Hank was away at a convention, snowed in without power somewhere in Michigan. He couldn't be contacted for notification until just before his place was cleared for takeoff. That was a very long flight home. His grief turned into psychosis. He began seeing images of his dead family from time to time. Sometimes while at work. Then others. People who died in the line of duty. Older relatives. People he had arrested. He was cracking hard. One huge, public outburst and Hank checked himself into a mental health facility in New York. Maybe his job would be waiting. Maybe it wouldn't. In the end, it didn't matter. History Since Outbreak: Hank survived because he was in a nuthouse, pure and simple. Walls, security, food stores, and as much medication as he chose to eat, if that was his thing. Plus, being in the middle of a highly populated major city in the middle of something so awfully pandemic was suicide, so staying put until the chaff got cleared out was a really, really good idea. When the food ran out, it was time to make a break for it. He had nothing back home, so he chose to accompany a likewise crazy colleague on his journey elsewhere. Mental Note: The Amish suck. Pennsylvania sucks. If they thing you're crazy, they want nothing to do with you. And those people don't even use buttons, for crap's sake. The idea was sound: Find a place with primitive tech and pure, off-grid living. Guns for hunting, make your own butter, no problem. Just, don't be different in any way and wear one of those hats. Hank hated those hats. They were invited to leave The Simple Life at the end of a shotgun, and good riddance to them all. Time to go further south. Kentucky! They make a lot of booze in Kentucky, right? Right? Wrong. A couple big spots that looked like they got hit by looters first. Figures. Very low population mixed with huge expanses of undeveloped land and depleted corn fields. Also a bust. So what was left? Not back the way they came. Not west, that seemed like an exercise in rampant stupidity. So further south. Some discussion with his learned and cracked colleague netted the idea that, being as they were a couple of old guys, they should do what old guys do and retire to Florida. Then came the Epic Quest for Florida. No the best, most knightly of quests, but to hell with it, Hank wasn't trying to impress anybody. Avoid the big cities, hug the coast, and follow it down to where Men were Men and Squeal Like a Pig, son. The Carolinas had a lot to offer. Hank considered stopping there, but there was a mission in play, damnit, and he couldn't just abandon his friend. The only problem was, how in the hell did they end up in the frigging swamps in Georgia? Having to move around and circumvent problems put them into an odd situation, surrounded by wetland and dead things. This was not ideal. Just don't get your fingers too close and you'll be okay." They've known each other since before people started dying, getting back up, and eating other people. In an asylum, and before that from Law Enforcement conventions. Yes, he is crazy and YES, he's unpredictable, but a lot of the odd shit he does has good reason, hindsight being due in part to him being a good man. While Hank gets tired of his bullshit from time to time, Wayne is always up front with him and occasionally just needs to be aimed in the right direction. They're the best friends that each other has.
👋 Erica Monroe 👋 "Hold up there, Apocalypse Barbie... ANOTHER cop? Great, we can swap more stories about why people suck." She has difficulties opening up, and so does Hank. It keeps them in a nice holding pattern, where Hank trusts her enough to survive with her but not really to the point of a big "getting to know you" moment yet. They have a couple of things in common. It keeps conversation tolerable. Sometimes even enjoyable.
♨️/👋 Nigel Cooper 👋/♨️ "Real pretty metal shirt you got there, Sportacus. Do they make them for men?" Hank doesn't dislike Hadrian. He is just an irritable, world weary asshole who would rather be left alone as much as anything, and Hadrian is rather gimmicky, hence a target for some of Hank's more callous behavior. Still, they did all opt to stay together despite clearly announcing intent not to. He will remain straightforward with the guy because he is a reliable traveling companion. Just not too close.
Hank Wright "It's one hell of a feeling, getting your sanity back the second the whole world goes to shit." He's sane, mostly sane. Didn't used to be, and he knows that now. In a short time, he lost everything: Family, career, his mind - and this was before the Outbreak. Dead people walking around forced him to collect himself. Maybe this is why he gets along better with crazy people like Wayne. Hank understands where they're coming from.
