As soon as the young woman had parted ways with her two best friends, she'd made a beeline for the large crowd that had already gathered; it wasn't long before she'd found a new group of people, mostly freshman and sophomores she'd recognized from her dance class, who'd initially been standing around anxiously playing on their cell phones. "We're here to turn the fuck up," Chanel had said as she gently tugged a few of the teens along, "We didn't come here to sit with our faces in our phones. We can do that shit at home." Soon, Chanel could be seen in the center of the crowd, dancing as if her life depended on it. It wasn't until she'd worked up a thirst that she left the group of underclassmen to their own devices and headed straight for the bar. Hennessy on the rocks was Chanel's go-to drink. After years of watching her uncle drain bottle after bottle of the dark brown liquid, Chanel had finally made up her mind to give the drink a shot when she was sixteen years old; she had stolen one of the bottles from the kitchen liquor cabinet while her uncle was at work and ultimately decided that the brandy actually didn't taste that bad. The young woman smiled at the memory as she pushed her way through the crowd, only stopping when she reached the bar. It took her thirty seconds to fix her drink, and after knocking that shit back like it was simply a glass of ice water, Chanel was ready to hit the dance floor again. Well, she was until she spotted something out of the corner of her eye that made her stop in her tracks. Penelope Richards, also known as the resident slut of King's Academy, had her arms wrapped tightly around the neck of who Chanel thought to be the hottest guy on the entire East coast, also known as Marcus Donaldson. Chanel watched with narrowed eyes and a clenched jaw as Penelope planted a big, fat smooch on the boy's cheek, and nearly gagged once she began to nuzzle his neck. Penny had only been attending the academy for about a year, but she'd already made a name for herself thanks to her unapologetic openness about her sex life and interesting after-school activities. Normally, Chanel didn't have any problem with the other woman and her "slutty" tendencies; Penny was a kind girl with a certain sassiness that Chanel admired, and whatever she decided to do in her free time was usually none of Chanel's concern. But this time was different. This time, it wasn't just some random King's Academy student or sleazy older man that Penny had chosen to involve herself with. No, this time it was the very man Chanel had been secretly crushing on for the past couple of months. It was the boy she always flashed a kind smile at nearly every day when she strutted past him in the halls, the boy she always offered a pen or pencil to whenever he needed it, the boy who Chanel occasionally fantasized about dating even though she could never muster up the confidence to flirt with him. As Chanel stood at the bar, staring in the direction of the two lovebirds with an empty glass in her hand, she couldn't help but wonder what it was that Marcus saw in the other woman. What was so different about Penny that made him notice her in a romantic light and not Chanel? Maybe it was her promiscuity or her assertiveness, two attributes that Chanel certainly lacked. Maybe he just didn't find her that attractive. Chanel was about to turn around and run back to the dance floor when she was suddenly reminded of a conversation she'd had with Julie a couple of weeks ago; Basically, she was told that she needed to own her self-confidence and just talk to him. So, after pouring herself another drink and taking a few quick sips, that was exactly what she did. Without even thinking twice about it, Chanel held her head high and strolled over to where Penny and Marcus stood, a slight grin plastered across her face. "Marcus...Penny," Chanel said once she'd reached the pair, "Nice to see you two here. Santiago's parties are always legendary... such a great way to kick off Senior year, right?" Chanel chewed the inside of her cheek as she wondered whether or not she should speak what was on her mind. After thinking back once more to what her friend had said, however, she decided that she would. "Oh, and I didn't know that you two were together," the young woman said after taking a quick sip from her nearly empty glass. "How cute."
