He enjoys khakis, polos and dress shirts more than jeans and graphic tees. While he can never afford to wear his suit more than for special occasions, it's the favorite piece of his wardrobe. Color wise, he's a proponent of autumn-ish colors, swapping between various shades of red, orange and brown. For work he's typically found in a white shirt and black slacks. Toby likes to wear his grandfather's old flat cap whenever he gets the chance. Despite his age, he's been given the unique opportunity of spending his entire childhood with his grandfather- a man with an uncanny eye for reading people. Toby learned from his grandpa the importance of body language, speech patterns and history in building up a sort of profile for what type of person any given stranger is. He learned, too, how to use this information; how to help others with their character flaws. He became something of an adviser for local kids, transferring life lessons he learned to other people his age and taking the credit for it in the process. Other kids came to him with their problems, knowing Toby could help and keep it secret, and he would take those questions to his grandfather. Years upon years of this crafted him a reputation in Springton's community as something of a proto-life counselor. He would never tell people that he's only helpful because of the immense satisfaction it brings him, rather than out of any sense of duty or honor to his friends and acquaintances. Toby is supremely selfish, though he tries his best to hide it. He never goes out of his way to do something that he doesn't think will satisfy him. At the first sign of trouble he'll be the first to slip his way out of it, offering any excuse he can think of to keep from suffering negative consequences. Habits: Toby goes to cover his face whenever he finds himself smiling too much, a habit he developed because his father used to make fun of his smile when he was younger. It had been a beautiful summer morning when his grandfather was shot and killed while attempting to talk down a friend that had recently become suicidal. Toby remembered feeling the numbness spread from his hands up to his head. He remembered the scent of flowers in the air as he realized that the most important man in his life was now dead and gone. He spent the rest of the day in his room, crying into his palms until he passed out from sheer exhaustion. History: The Crawfords were a perfectly ordinary family of five living in their perfectly ordinary suburban home. Mrs. Crawford's father had moved in with them, refusing to go into a nursing home despite the fact that he could no longer afford to stay in his old house. Toby was the middle child of three, stuck perfectly in that spot where his parents spent more time scolding his older sister and coddling his younger brother than they did looking his direction. He was alright with that, however, because his grandpa spent practically every moment he could with the young Toby. The two were fast friends, to the point where his grandfather was more than willing to homeschool the child when public school was no longer a comfortable option for the boy. The two were practically inseparable. Even as Toby grew older, he never sought out anyone as quickly as he did his papa. He loved that old man more than life itself. Sharing in his wisdom and knowledge was practically his favorite part of the day for nearly two decades of life. Nothing would ever change his life as significantly as the day Toby learned that man had been murdered. For weeks he felt like he was living underwater. Everything felt muted, and he was sure he was drowning. Thrashing against the grief and confusion did little to alleviate it. Even as time went on, that wound scarred over, but it never fully healed. Even as he's pursued work as a chef and a cook and grown into a man, Toby feels like there's a part of himself that's still missing; a part of himself that died with his grandpa.
