You don't have to be from the same squad or regiment at all. Last time we had medics from the UNSC Army whilst we also had ODST Marksmen and so forth. I only really suggest having characters in the same unit if you wish for them to have previously known another character or NPC for plot purposes. Other than that, go for what you wish out of the syllabus.

I'm reducing the Spartan teams in the mission to one. I was meant to change that and it slipped by me, but thanks for the heads up!

Serving with ODST as a Petty Officer is definitely a viable strategy. It's kind of like how ONI worked with Buck's ODST team, which I am considering whether or not I want my character to be of ONI origins or not. Either way, whether I make them an NPC or character, someone to have ONI as their background is possibly vital as an asset to the story.
