The large mansion sat on a hill, overlooking the back of the property. From the patio, hardwood stairs descended towards a lush area of green, decorated with topiaries of multiple animals. Elephants, dolphins, horses, even a scorpion. The topiary jungle was next to a basketball court, full sized on a patch of asphalt, about thirty feet from a large, luxurious swimming pool. Bright, fluorescent light illuminated the basketball court. The sun had just set, but already the air was already devoid of any warmth that the day had held, which was not much as is. On the court, Connor Prince was dribbling a dirty basketball, shirtless, with sweat pouring down his body, unbothered by the cold. Music blasted from his phone, which was lying on the ground next to his shirt, as he practiced his shooting. “Hey kid” his Uncle Jack called from the patio, a glass of Diet Pepsi in his hand. The past week with his uncle had been uneventful. He rarely saw Jack, aside from breakfast and dinner, where they made polite small talk. Connor’s music was still blaring at full volume, so loud that Jack could hear it from his lofty vantage point. Taking a sip from his drink, he took the stairs down, and strolled over to the side of the court, and watched as Connor played. Connor ignored Jack for a few minutes, before finally dropping the ball and stopping the music. “What do you want? You just gonna fucking watch me play?” Connor asked harshly, using his discarded shirt to wipe the sweat off of his face. “I take it you found out about your dad’s announcement,” Jack asked, taking another drink from his glass, and staring across the court at his nephew, his face a hard mask of disinterest, as if this conversation were just mundane small talk between him and a colleague who’s name he’d already forgotten. Connor grimaced at Jack’s words. “Of fucking course I did. It’s all anybody’s talking about. Timothy Prince, running for president. I hope he doesn’t even get past the fucking primaries,” Connor spat. He’d seen the news of his father’s candidacy this morning, and had spent the day fuming. “He didn’t even fucking call! He didn’t ask me what I thought, didn’t even warn me! He hasn’t called once since he shipped me out here, and then he goes and runs for fucking president! Makes sense that he shipped me across the country though. He doesn’t want me tarnishing his race. Well if that’s what you came to talk to me about, you can fuck off. I don’t want anything to do with him or his stupid race.” Jack let out a loud, heart laugh. “You think I give a rat’s ass about your dad’s race? I came out to see how your handling it, and from what I can tell, the answer is poorly,” Jack said. “Why the fuck do you care?! Just leave me the fuck alone!” Connor screamed back in response. “I was alone in New York, I think I can be alone just fucking fine here,” Connor said, quieter but no less venomous. Jack chuckled. “Look, Kid, I’m not gonna try and tell you how to deal with all this. I can tell you right now though, this isn’t it. You’re sitting here wallowing, and that’s only gonna lead you to more hurt,” Jack said. “He’s my brother, so trust me when I say, I know he can suck. Especially lately.” Jack sighed, and for a moment, Connor’s face softened. “Whatever. I’ll be eighteen in two years, and then it won’t really matter, will it?” Jack stood silent for a moment, before offering up his own advice. “There’s a movie night at Captain Cuddles. You should go. It won’t hurt for you to make some friends out here. If you won’t talk to me about any of this, you can at least talk to people your own age.” Connor scoffed. “Yeah, I’ll pass,” Connor said, balling up his shirt and scooping up his ball, before making his way back towards the house. “If you stay here, we’re gonna have to talk about the Helmsley party you lied about going to the other night,” Jack said, turning to face his nephew, daring him to push back. Connor glared back at him for a moment before muttering his response. “Fine.”
