The train of thought I was going for is that if extending it too thin puts you at the risk of losing an arm, then you shouldn't spread it out too thin then. Or at least not recklessly.

I mean, heroes losing limbs or suffering major injuries wouldn't be uncommon. Look at Ectoplasm.
