She always did. Call it a bad habit from her old ‘game,’ call it something that was in her blood, the end result was the same. Hailey was always two steps ahead of everyone, and now? Tonight? She had someone she wanted to speak with; in this instance, it was her youngest sibling, and only sister. Hailey was getting tired of waiting up for this. She’d been sitting at the island in the main kitchen for some time now, rather impatiently. In fact, by her reckoning, it had been nearly twenty minutes, and was close to almost being ten o’clock. Did her younger sister’s audacity know no bounds?! For god’s sake, there was a reason Hailey was in this early: it was a school night. Even if Hailey did have… late nights with Hana, at least she was polite enough to make sure she was back to be in bed at a reasonable time. That Cyndi couldn’t even afford her that was frustrating in itself, but Hailey would keep her cool. She was her mother’s daughter, after all, and Alyssa Green was very good at keeping cool when her emotions were… not. Even so... “If she does not come soon, I want you to go get her and drag her to me by the collar of her shirt.” Hailey had now reached her limit twice that day. Once with Hana, and now once again with her sister. It was a… special kind of Thursday. Her Butler though, simply shook his head. “Faith in Xander. He said they’ll be here. They’ll be here.” As if on cue, there was the opening of a door, the shuffling of feet, and it wasn’t long before the pair of Xander and Cyndi were stepping into the area where Hailey sat. “Fucking finally. Butler, Butler. Leave us. I wish to speak to my sister alone.” Hailey’s order was given, and Butler shrugged his shoulder before glancing at Xander and gesturing with his head for the younger man to follow, before leading the way out of the room. There was no argument from the youngest Butler. There was no point. Hailey wasn't someone you wanted to disappoint or upset. Simply nodding his head, he gave Cyndi one last smile before trailing behind his superior. Meanwhile, Cyndi was in her own world, with a song stuck in her head that played at the late night ice cream shop. More on that later. Dropping her purse on the floor, she did a playful pirouette to the music that she could only hear. She hadn’t really noticed that it was just her and her sister in the kitchen. All she was paying attention to was her happy feelings being expressed with her feet and voice. The Butlers were gone and it felt like she was the only one in the room, as she sang out loud, “Cause you make me feel like I’ve been locked out of heaven, for too long, for too long…” A nice old Bruno Mars song. Hailey raised an eye as she stared at her singing and dancing sister. Was this for real? Why did she even have siblings? Why was her life gated by these people? There was an internal sigh, but no crack in the armor that was Hailey Green’s poker face. They were ultimately her siblings, and she had to be better to them; if not for herself, then for Hana. Hailey raised her hand and snapped her fingers. “Cyndi Destiny Green. Focus.” Bringing her tiny dancer toes down, halting in her stance, Cyndi finally acknowledged her sister, “Oh Hailey! You’re still up! Did you have a good day? I haven’t seen you in like forever.” It was true. A whole semester and some. “You look great even in your pajamas.” The baby of the family beamed at her older sister. “Of course I do. And yes, I understand that your presence is sending our brother’s girlfriend back to Korea or some such thing. Entirely unfortunate. Equally unimportant. Sit.” Hailey pointed at a seat beside her, even considering snapping her fingers again. “I have been waiting for twenty minutes, and it is exceptionally late.” “Ha, who needs sleep?” Cyndi laughingly joked, but then realized she should probably take her sister seriously before she gets more upset. Grumbling to herself, the princess took a seat and waited expectantly, “Is it really that important? You didn’t have to wait for me. There’s always the morning.” “Everything I care about is ‘that’ important. I understand you’ve been gone for a while, but that does not change things. I am still the eldest, and I am therefore still in command, as the Butlers would put it.” Hailey tapped the counter with a spoon, shaking her head. Insolence would not be tolerated, but would be dealt with later. More surgically. “I understand that you have a ‘boyfriend’ now. Saturday at 6:30 PM. No earlier, no later. He will arrive precisely when he needs to, and that is when he needs to.” “B-boyfriend?” Cyndi’s eyes widened. Was he expected to come over, already? When did Hailey find out? Did everyone know? Did MOMMY know?! “We haven’t discussed that yet! We only went on a date that may lead to more. I don’t know if we’re ‘official’!” Crossing her arms, as well as her legs, she grew defensive at her sister’s assumption. Cyndi wasn’t some easy girl and she didn’t even know how she felt about Justin. They still had so much to learn about one another. “You have until Saturday to figure that out then, don’t you? I already made plans for him to come. If he doesn’t, I suppose Henry would eat his food. He… is kind of a bastard, after all. You do realize how slowly you’re moving in comparison don’t you? I put a collar around Hana’s neck and she’s my property. Henry is living with Min-seo. In less than a week.” Hailey smiled slightly and leaned forward, ‘bopping’ Cyndi on the nose, “little Cyndi Green has one date and doesn’t know if she’s ‘official.’ It’s adorable, really.” ...Cyndi contemplated her sister’s words. She was taking it slow, wasn’t she? Did mommy or daddy take it slow? Probably not. Squinting her face, she cautiously asked, “Do I need to buy a collar too and make room for him in my room? What if mommy doesn’t approve?” “Absolutely not. You could never handle the stressors and challenges of wholly owning another person. It’s more work than even I thought. I’ve had to step down from my position as ‘Queen’ earlier than anticipated as a result of the attention Hana craves and needs. Even getting her to go on a playdate tonight was damn near impossible. Do not make room for him in your room.” She straightened back up, her mission more or less accomplished. “If mother does not approve, then that is your burden to bear. You’re a teenager now, and we tend to make mistakes. It’s up to him to get approval, it’s not up to you. Inform him of this beforehand.” “But if he is someone I choose, shouldn’t I state my case?” Cyndi didn’t know much of Justin and how he handled family interactions. It could be better if she fought this battle herself. Clasping her hands together, she eyed her sister. Why was her sister advising her, anyways? “If you wish. What if you do, and you win mother over — because you will, you are her favorite — and then she meets him, and hates him? She’ll never trust your judgement in partners ever again.” Hailey shook her head, before physically waving a hand to dismiss the issue before she looked down at her phone, “whatever. Do what you want. I don’t care, I just want him to be at the dinner. I intend for Hana to meet everyone, and I’d prefer it if you did not interfere with that plan.” “How would I interfere?” Cyndi raised an eyebrow. She wasn’t going to throw a brick at the family dinner. There was no way for her to ruin Hana meeting everyone. “By not bringing your boyfriend. Temporary or otherwise, he is part of the family.” Fucking duh. “How else?” “So with this logic, one date means he’s part of the family? Jeez.” Did her sister think she was ready for wedding bells? She wasn’t Stella, for god’s sake. If anything, she cared more about her career than anything else. “You need to talk to your brother. Go pull him away from his Korean.” Hailey stood up and brushed off her shirt. “We are done. Have a good night, Cyndi.” Hailey raised her right hand and snapped her fingers rather loudly, and seconds later, the sound of Butler’s footsteps could be heard coming toward them. “...uh, okay. Night, Hailey.” When Xander entered the room, Cyndi decided to relieve him of his duties for the night. “I’m going to bother my brother, so feel free to relax. Drink a beer. Watch AWE. If I need you, I’ll call for you. Night, Xander.” “You got it. Night.” Before making her way upstairs, Cyndi slipped behind everyone and made her way to the fridge, making her a quick glass of milk. Forgetting about her purse on the floor, Xander would take care of it, she shuffled her way to her brother’s room and gently knocked on it. While she waited, she took a sip of milk. There was no response at first (though there were certainly voices beyond the door, and other sounds coming across the way. Sounds that the youngest Green might not understand, though by the end of her knocking, there was the shuffling of feet, and click of a door unlocking, and… the door just barely opened far enough for a shirtless Henry to poke his head out. “...suh, dude?” Blinking once. Blinking twice. Cyndi gawked at her brother for a moment, having heard unknown noises. With a puzzled look, the yougin’ slowly voiced, “Hailey told me to pull you away from your Korean.” For what? She didn’t know, but might as well figure it out while she disturbed her brother, who was in the zone. His zone. She took another sip of milk. Milk was good before bed. “It’s a bad time, Cyndi. You can’t see it, but I ain’t wearing pants. I don’t know what she even wanted. Does anyone know what that bitch wants?” Henry asked, though he shut the door for a second, there were more hushed voices, smacking of lips, and Henry opened the door, turning himself sideways to slip out of it. Now, he was wearing boxers, and a giant, fluffy bathrobe, with his initials embroidered on the back. “Okay. I’m pulled.” “I think it might be in regards to Saturday night. Dinner. Maybe? She wants me to bring Justin, who I only had one date with, and she wants you to bring Min. This is a must in her book. She also said that I’m moving too slow, which I disagree. I’m not going to jump on a boy until I know he’s worth the jump.” Cyndi responded in a matter-of-fact tone. “...Saturday night dinner? I ain’t havin’ dinner with her, and I sure as fuck ain’t lettin’ Min have dinner with her… I’ll figure that out later. You reminded me. Stop trying to be Amity Bellerose before you run out of time to be Cyndi Green. You’re gonna blink and your teenage years are gonna be gone because you think you have to do all this crap to make people like you. People like you because you’re nice, and thoughtful, and caring and all that lame shit. You gotta relax, and breathe and make some friends before you run outta time. Amity was a robot, dude.” “But she was idolized! And got famous real quick. And was like America’s little miss sweetheart!” Cyndi retorted. How could he say auntie was a robot?! “I dunno if you know this but Dad was all up in her shit before she met JJ, and she wasn’t going for him because all she cared about was workin’ and shit, and you don’t wanna be that person, dude. You’re really gonna sell your soul and your humanity to be an idol? You’d never last. You’re too empathetic. You’re gonna be famous anyway because you’re Alyssa Green’s kid, dude. I’m just sayin’. Food for thought. Have you ever asked her about this, or have you just assumed you want exactly what she has? Answer quick. Min’s gonna lose the mood.” “I’m not just mommy’s baby. I’m more than that too. I have dancing feet and mama’s voice. I should use it. And how do you know I’m not going to make it as an idol?” Cyndi was getting legitimately defensive, not understanding why her siblings were telling her what to do and how to live her life right when she just made her return “Whatever. I’ll think about it." She hadn't really asked her aunt about her experiences as an idol... “You should go to the dinner because I think Hana deserves to meet the family and if Min is really something to you, you should treat her differently than the others.” Her brother never tried with anything. All he did was socialize and here he was telling her what he thought was best for her. Like, what gives him the right? In frustration, she took another sip of her drink. How dare he. “Whatever dude. I’m better at this than you. You do what you wanna do. I’m gonna go finish what I was in the middle of now, see ya.” With that, Henry turned and disappeared back into his room, clicking the lock shut. Her brother was a jerk. An absolute jerk! Cyndi’s mood dropped expeditiously. The song of her night stopped playing and she silently made her way to her room, closing the door behind her and locking it. She needed to write in her journal... she was getting sad. She didn't like being sad. That's why she came back. To be happy. Was coming back a mistake?
