The lady, Millicent, was clearly jumpy, although whether that was due to her supposed sickness, a weak temperament or something more... sinister, William couldn't be sure. Egerton seemed like a fool, too eager to please, and William dismissed him from his focus, at least for now. It was Rutherford that seized William's attention. He was a man of contradictions himself, so he was all too familiar with the clashing of emotions that flickered across Rutherford's face in an instant. There was a darkness, and a cruelness to the man, but there was love there, or at least tenderness for Millicent. His offer to attend their wedding had a duel purpose. He certainly relished the opportunity to perform, but something un-nerved him about this pairing, and some half-forgotten emotion of empathy and chivalry stirred within his heart. The bruises he could glimpse across Millicent's arms and face only further cemented his decision as he waited for Rutherford's response.
