It was just so surreal to him, the idea that in just a few more months he'd be walking across a stage and receiving his diploma. Shortly after that, he'd be free to do whatever it was that his heart desired; maybe he'll take after his sister and head to a four year university, or maybe he'll forget about school all together and travel the world. Anyway, that was what Kavan was thinking about as he sat in the very back of the auditorium, his earbuds in and his feet resting on the seat in front of him. He wasn't fully sure why the entire senior class had been called in for an assembly, but he simply figured that it had something to do with preparing to order caps and gowns for the time coming or perhaps going over the rules for homecoming. Homecoming. Unlike most of the senior class, Kavan had not originally planned on attending. "I went to the one last year," the boy had said to a friend not too many days ago, "And it honestly wasn't all that it's cracked up to be. Just turned out to be a waste of my time and money." Since he wasn't going to the dance, Kavan didn't even bother purchasing a new suit or getting a haircut, and securing a date was certainly out of the question. Well, it was until Mrs. Sanders, the theatre teacher, announced why they'd been called into the auditorium that afternoon. In an instant, Kavan yanked out his earbuds and sat upright in his seat, his eyes focused on the older woman that stood at center stage. Was she being serious? “The left bowl has the names of every male student in this class, and the right bowl has the female names. I shall pick a name from each bowl and announce it until everybody has been partnered,” Mrs. Sanders continued. Though he wasn't entirely sure why, upon hearing that there would only be male and female pairings, Kavan immediately felt a twinge of disappointment, but shrugged it off when the woman continued to speak. It was in that moment that Kavan heard none other than Archer Diedrikson loudly call out from the crowd. "This is some hetero-normative bullshit! It’s homophobic as fuck!" Kavan couldn't help but chuckle and shake his head as he watched Marisol shove the young man back into his seat. While he wholeheartedly agreed with what Archer had said, he knew better than to believe that the school would actually give a damn. As expected, Mrs. Sanders barely faltered as she continued to announce the pairings. "Mr. Varma, you shall attend with Ms. Endive," Mrs. Sanders called from the front, and after wracking his brain for a brief moment, Kavan slouched back down into his seat, feeling a slight sense of relief. While he and Bea were not the closest of friends, Kavan thought the young woman to be pretty cool when she wasn't hanging around cry-baby Baxter. Mostly, he was just glad that he didn't end up being paired with someone he didn't know too well or someone who'd probably wreck his car with a baseball bat if he made a wrong move. For the rest of the assembly, Kavan simply assumed his previous position; he kicked his feet up on the seat in front of him, put his earbuds back in, and blasted his music until he noticed the other students begin to exit the room. Without hesitation, the boy jumped from his seat and made a beeline for the school cafeteria; he was starving.
