Both of their parents worked dead-end jobs most days, so they were often left in the homes of family friends, cheap daycare services, and, occasionally, the lap of their grandmother, who they started affectionately calling Nonna by the time they were able to speak. Nonna was a hardworking and impatient woman, even in her old age, but she always made time for Ashely when they came along. Despite in the midst of writing a memoir (and people wonder where Ashley gets their narcissism from), Nonna would often sit down with Ashely and spin tales of her time as an actress and model when she used to live in California. They would watch her films together, or just general classic Hollywood flicks until Ash's parents came to pick them up. Those few days, where Ashley would stay from seven in the morning till seven at night, surrounded by tap dancing and singing and acting, were the seeds that would eventually grow into the tree that was Ashley's life. Throughout most of their school life, Ashley was a social butterfly. Where they failed in passing grades and below average interest in their education they more than made up for in a plethora of friends and an attachment to the artsy side of learning. Ashley was attentive to teach themself everything their Nonna had known in her lifetime, so they auditioned for every play, took every musical elective they could, and spent their nights studying the greats and begging their mom and dad to take dance lessons on the side. A lack of money made many of Ashley's dreams cloudy, so they took up working two after-school jobs once they were old enough and soon began paying their own way into classes and lessons to strengthen their talents. They honestly didn't really even bother to notice their strings until after they (barely) graduated high school. Rose-colored dreams of flying to LA and leaving misty old Boston behind became muddled as money once again chained them down to the ground. The strings suddenly became a distraction from their dashed wishes, then, and they finally came into the mindset of "where will these lead if I follow them?". In an effort to make some meaningful connections in their life before working without rest and skipping town completely, Ashely settled down in an apartment in one of the poorer parts of Boston and is now looking out for those who just so happen to be entangled in their life. Living with librarian parents ensured that she was raised among books and pamphlets, and by the time she was ten she was reading full novels with little guidance. Her love for older things came from her old brownstone apartment in the city, wherein she was often told stories of how it is one of the few remaining buildings from before the modernization of the city began. From then on, Judith sought old knowledge, and this drive brought her to the lands of medieval literature, texts, and dead, dead languages that were just begging her to memorize. She was a natural in language arts and floated through high school and eight years of college with generally favorable memories. Of course, it was after she received her Ph.D. when she met Robert. Though they had no strings attached, he pampered her with compliments and drinks and love for about three years. The pregnancy was accidental, as were most of Robert's tantrums and verbal abuse (or so he used to say). They split before Milicent was born, leaving Judith to raise her young daughter alone in her cold, book-filled apartment. Help from her still living mother and friends made raising the baby girl easy, and more time alone allowed Judith to really understand herself to the point of eventually coming out as gay. Now, five years after her baby girl's birth, Judith is working as both a translator and professor at a prestigious university in Boston alongside friends and enemies alike. She is happy, if not a little bit lonely looking, and, as always, has no time to bother worrying about stupid little strings.
