[indent]Genessy Henderson does not believe in fate, or destiny, or any of those other romance-novel delusions.

Growing up in a small, single-parent household in downtown Chicago proved to be pretty stressful for the young woman. Because she was the oldest of three girls, Gen had always been used to there being a certain amount of responsibility placed upon her shoulders; while her mother was busy at work, Genessy was expected to look after her sisters. She was responsible for making sure they both got to and from school on time, did their homework in the afternoons, ate dinner, brushed their teeth, showered, and were tightly tucked into bed before their mother got home from her long shift at the hospital. It wasn't until Gen was fifteen that she was able to step down as a mother figure in the household and focus more on herself; her mother had finally received a job promotion and moved them to a better neighborhood in Boston.

Throughout grade school, Genessy was a force to be reckoned with. She was in the top ten of her graduating class, was the president of both the Fashion Design and model UN clubs, and had more than enough "haters" to keep her motivated to strive for success. Now, don't get me wrong; Genessy Henderson was never some hardcore bitch. No, Gen was just dead set on becoming more than what society expected of her, and she was willing to do anything to achieve this goal.

Due to her upbringing, Genessy never stopped believing in working hard to make your own way. It wasn't [i]fate[/i] that lead to her mother landing the job that pulled them out of poverty or that eventually got Genessy into the illustrious Boston University on a generous scholarship, it was hard work and dedication. Genessy [i]chose[/i] to turn down her University offer and pursue a runway modelling career instead. She [i]chose[/i] to attend a modelling school for a few years while working at a customer service desk in order to pay her rent and light bills. Genessy was going to [i]choose[/i] who were friends and future partners were going to be regardless of some silly little string. There was no "higher power" or "greater being" that had the ability to push her along a path that she did not consciously choose for herself...

[indent]Meet Demetrius "Meech" King, a talented, free-spirited, and charismatic young man who has spent the majority of his life doing the one thing he loves the most: playing basketball.[/indent]

[indent]Demetrius was born in Brooklyn, New York, the only child of Katherine and Vaughn King. The small family of three relocated to Boston, Massachusetts, where Vaughn had been stationed, when Meech was nine years old. Being raised in a strict military household proved to be very difficult for Demetrius due to his naturally free-spirited and unrestrained demeanor. Growing up, Demetrius would constantly get into trouble with his father for things such as staying out past curfew, skipping class, sneaking girls into the house, and more. The only time Meech and his father weren't going back and forth was when they were shooting hoops together on the basketball court. Throughout all of grade school and eventually college, it was Vaughn who helped Meech become the best point guard he could be.

It didn't come as much of a surprise to anyone when Demetrius King was drafted to the Boston Celtics at age twenty-one. Years of practice and hard work had prepared Meech for that evening, and from the very moment he stepped foot onto the court with a freshly cleaned NBA jersey on his back, Meech made it a mission to give it his all. Demetrius King played for the Celtics for a total of four seasons; his professional basketball career was cut short at the age of twenty-five when he tore his ACL during playoffs. Thankfully he had a backup plan: after healing up, he decided to use his degree and become a physical therapist.

Despite his life not turning out the way he thought it would, Meech simply couldn't be happier. While working as a physical therapist has its benefits, the young man has also decided to take up coaching a high school basketball team; he figured that if he could no longer play, he'd at least help other young kids realize their full potential. Meech has always believed that everything happens for a reason, so maybe this career ending injury was no exception. Maybe it was destined for him to use his knowledge of the game to help the next generation succeed. Now that he's so busy with his new career and coaching gig, Demetrius doesn't really have time to worry about some silly little strings that are wrapped around his fingers. While he isn't at all opposed to the idea of one day finding his soulmate, he simply doesn't see them as a main priority.
