A Bloody Boring Bus Bonanza

Natsuki & Sumi

Today was a good day, is what Natsuki would say if it wasn’t for the fact that they were being cramped on to this school bus at 7 am in the morning. To call her a early bird would be a blatant lie. She didn’t even get up at 10 in the morning to help the old folks get out of bed. No even those people she helped had to wait until Natsuki was fully awake. Because while she was just as helpful, she certainly didn’t exude the ‘characteristic qualities of a hero’ Natsuki, unbeknown to herself of whom she was sitting next to, having not checked the seat beside her ended up next to Sumi. She yawned obnoxiously, stretching herself out over her side of the seat, taking up as much space as humanly possible. “Bloody hell, Ya think that a school bus would at least smell clean. But nope, its more or less like the darn country bus the old people take to their bingo.” She was making quite a racket, her voice doing little to masquerade her annoyed tone of voice. In fact the moment the bus got moving Natsuki would be making comments about the destroyed landscape they drove through being a bit obnoxious. It was what happened when she was tired. She'd take an interest in things but in the worst possible way. Bus rides had never been Sumi’s favourite part of going to school. She wasn’t much of a talker, and never had been, so the only activity available to her to pass the time was looking out the window, something she normally found quite tedious. But today, it put a knot in her stomach. All this destruction, she thought as she watched the still partially-ruined city slide by, the scenery dredging up unpleasant memories. Did they choose this route on purpose? That’d be just like a hero academy... Her heart sank even further as she felt someone plop into the seat next to hers, their body spreading out to occupy what seemed like the most space possible. They were, in a word, uncomfortably close, one of their arms hooked around the back of Sumi’s seat. She froze. Oh no! Not already...! The girl said something to her she didn’t quite make out, drowning in her own thoughts. Something about old people and bingo? “R-Really? I wouldn’t really know…” Sumi at this point started fidgeting, carefully edging as close as she could to the window, hopefully without being too obvious. Too close too close!! Please go away!!! Natsuki, having not noticed the girl on the seat, slowly turned her head to look at her with annoyed eyes as if listening to a fly on the wall. “Sorry what was that?” She said, Sumi’s quiet voice meaning that she likely misheard what they were saying and was taking it to be an insult. “N-Nothing! It was nothing I swear! I wasn’t wondering how you know what old people’s bingo buses smell like if that’s what you think!” Sumi said, waving her hands in front of her face in an attempt to defuse the situation. Sadly, all her flailing about accomplished was leaving with her foot firmly in her mouth. “What, are ya insinuating that I’m old?” Natsuki said. She was getting a bit confused as she raised her voice a bit, getting annoyed at the person talking funny-like. Her face was showing her visible frustration. She had a mask on. So why was a fellow delinquent like her acting so… weird? “Not at all! I think you’re very pretty!” Sumi said somewhat defensively, before realizing the words that had just come out of her mouth. “Th-that’s not what I meant! I-I mean…” “Right and I’m a giant moth woman.” Natsuki scowled before sighing. “Look, if you’re gonna try to annoy someone on the first day, why on bloody earth would you try to pick on the toughest girl in the room?” she growled, thinking the ‘bully’ to be kind of an idiot. “Pick on you?” Sumi asked, suddenly confused. “I didn’t… oh no. It’s happening again…” The masked girl suddenly looked very depressed, her mechanical arms and legs folding in to the fetal position. But why? Natsuki slowly pieced together the scenario… Mask… Corner. Shy girl. Obvious aversion to conflict,. Either this bully was the world's biggest coward or! She was picking on someone that really needed a friend. Either way both options would require consul from Big Sister Kaiju. “Woah! hey there, don’t go getting all sad on me on your first day.” Natsuki said hurriedly trying to salvage the situation. “I misunderstood what you were saying.” Natsuki continued doing it to avoid having to deal with tears. “I thought what with your get-up and all, you were a delinquent so I thought you were the type of girl who knew this type of thing. I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings otherwise.” Natsuki continued, her eyebrows fraught with worry for the girl. She might be a delinquent herself but she never likes to hurt the feelings of the people that really don’t deserve it. “What? Do you mean… my mask? I-I thought if I wore it, I wouldn’t scare p-people anymore. Are you saying it makes me look like…” Sumi said, realizing and then covering her face with her hands as she blushed and groaned. “That’s not what I meant at all…” Natsuki laughed softly. “Ah hey now, Don’t take my misgivings to mean anything. Besides, what do people have to be scared of beneath that mask, Your probably adorable. So go on girl! Wear your quirk on your sleeve if it's that, and if its a scar, well flaunt it. It's a show of strength not of weakness!” Natsuki grinned giving them as small pat on the shoulder. She then slowly looked at Sumi's prosthetic arms, wondering if that was to do with her quirk… Was the girl in front of her a robot or something if so that was awesome! “Are your arms to do with your quirk. They look awesome” She said eyes glittering with sudden infatuation sidetracked by the sudden coolness. Sumi became quiet at the mention of her arms. “K-Kind of…" She fidgeted awkwardly again for a few more seconds, twiddling her thumbs before changing the subject. “You really think I shouldn’t wear it? People say I look scary without it…” She removed her mask to reveal… a perfectly normal-looking face. Natsuki nodded at the acknowledgement that Sumi’s arms were to do with her quirk, she was totally expecting something cool like a rocket punch. Perhaps giant monster movies had spoiled her rotten. “Yes, I think you’d look fine without it. Besides if people are scared of you thats their problem” Natsuki said her eyes focused on Sumi’s face as she slowly lowered the mask. Natsuki was expecting a massive anomaly but… No She was staring at the face of a perfectly normal high-school student. “I don’t see much of an issue.” Natsuki laughed. Internally she was a bit disappointed She was expecting something awesome like scars or a monster mouth. “Really?! Oh thank goodness!” Sumi smiled, revealing a mouth full of fleshy barbs, buzzsaw-like teeth, and numerous strange, tongue-like apparatuses dripping with caustic spit. “I guess people really are more accepting at these hero academies, huh?" “Holy ****!” Natsuki said reeling back for a second at the sudden sight of her mouth “I... I was not expecting that!” They said before laughing. “That is better than what I was expecting. You look like a monster from the deep!, And that's awesome! All the villains are gonna be terrified of you!” Natsuki said cheerily. Sumi cringed momentarily at Natsuki’s outburst, but relaxed again when she started laughing. Then, blushing she quickly put on her mask again. “B-but I don’t want them to be terrified of me! I want to help people! I mean, if they’re villains maybe… but that’s different!” She sighed, and brought her legs up to her chest. “I knew it. I should just leave the mask on…” Natsuki sighed softly “Oh come on, your not that fear inducing, I find it kinda cute the way it contrasts with your appearance. Besides if you don’t want to scare people, maybe letting them get used to your teeth would be a better way to do so. Just food for thought.” Natsuki said softly patting the curled up girl on the head. “And hey, you think you got it bad… I’m gonna have a total issue trying to help people~ Oh and where's my formalities. The names Natsuki, Na-tsu-ki, Got that?” Sumi looked up hopefully, and uncurled her legs. “A-ah! I’m Sumi! Sumi Elias! I-It’s really nice to meet you, Natsuki!” She shook Natsuki’s hand excitedly. The grip felt strange. Smooth and cold. “What do you mean you’re gonna have a total issue, though? Isn’t that what we’re here to learn how to do?” “Oh no no~ Its just its gonna get harder the longer I work at it, counter intuitively.” Natsuki said with a soft chuckle. Shaking their hand back firmly and respectfully as she slowly retracted her hand. “That being said, its nice to meet you too Sumi.” Natsuki smiled. Her mind slowly whirring. A cool mouth meant an eating quirk right… So why the prosthetics...

It was at that point the bus came to a screeching halt. Sumi winced, hearing the hydraulics hiss as the bus settled and the doors slowly swung open. It felt like the sound was something way more ominous than it should have been. As awkward as the conversation with Natsuki was, it had also been a welcome distraction from the thought of the final entrance exam. “I guess we should probably... get going, y’know?” she said to Natsuki, still unsure of herself as she grabbed her backpack and got in line to exit the bus. She took a deep breath. It’s okay, don’t freak out. You’ve been preparing for this, you’ve been preparing for this, it’ll be okay... she thought to herself. But as the line creeped closer to the door, her thoughts eventually turned into I haven’t prepared enough for this! Eventually she took a tumultuous first step out on to the cracked asphalt, dirt and grit crunching under her shoes as she took in the ruined vista and felt the cold sea wind slap her face, causing her to shiver. She rubbed her shoulders for warmth more out of habit than anything. Her prosthetics were as cold and harsh as the wind, and did nothing to alleviate the cold that her t-shirt wasn’t already accomplishing. Sumi cast a confused glance towards the little girl. Who was she? The proctor’s kid? No, that was a dangerous assumption. She might actually be a teacher with a rejuvenation Quirk. That sort of thing was possible nowadays. Intent on not missing a word, Sumi listened carefully.
Natsuki gasped slightly as she almost fail off her seat from the sudden shift in momentum as the bus came to a stop. Still. She felt like she had bit a right arse to Sumi at the start, but everything seemed alright now. She could dwell on it later she told herself as she got up from her seat following behind them. Focus Natz, Ignore the fact that your a Kaiju that's barely taller than the average person. Cling to the idea of a hero for now and you’ll get through this exam. She said slapping her face slightly as she saw the line move forward. Even if you could of prepared more, there is no use preparing now. Do it on the fly, and don’t cry about it She told herself mentally as she stepped out, behind Sumi. Stretching on the cracked asphalt, Natsuki slowly eased the tensed muscles in her arms as a result of sitting down, a small warm-up was always a good idea, especially with a quirk as physical as hers. Still it’d be much more nice if the day was a little hotter as per her preference, though the skies were mostly clear so it was a fair trade off. Looking at, and listening towards the youthful girl instructing them with a tone that made it sound like they should know all this already. A tone that pissed Natsuki off, causing her to clench her fist a bit and stifle her annoyed words. Still They had been given the objective. It was time to get to work
