So, I may have gone a bit overboard. I ended up creating a character that might be a bit too much for the setting, but since I figure the idea is more based around character interactions, a priest with a holy mission might be interesting.
_______________________________________________________________________ Name: Priest Saul the 27th Age: 21 Gender: Male Equipment: - Holy Cross Staff: Every member of the Holy Church of Paradise carries this staff. Each staff is considered a holy tool, but is often used to deliver punishment to criminals, or the odd man who decrees Paradise exists. Each member of the church is capable of using this staff to make water holy. But it's pretty much an old practice, because you can't drink holy water, due to it being blasphemous, and water is too rare for that. - Holy Revolver of Mary and Joseph with the Blessings of Jesus and Saul and...: The full name goes on to list a bunch of religious figures. Either way, it's made by the master forge worker of the Holy Church of Paradise. A revolver with a unique seven bullet cylinder (One for each of the seven sacraments.) Members of the church receive this as a gift before they set out on their journey. The revolved is connected to their hip by a chain, to keep it from being stolen by the heretics of the land. (Bullet Count: 12) - A bag holding all the bounties of the Earth: The Holy Church of Paradise is constantly accepting donations. As members are also qualified to be bounty hunters, or mercenaries, or even assassins if morally justified, they carry a small purse that is used primarily to buy 'Holy ammo' for their 'Holy Revolvers." The bag is designed with various pouches, with some for food, holding water, and even loose change. Abilities: Day in and day out the boys and girls of the Holy Church of Paradise are educated, trained, and treated like drones. They live and breath the training that was invested in them, to a degree where those who are aware to the degree of training each member undergoes is shockingly aware of how absolutely dead they are. As a priest, certain skills were ingrained in Saul's head. Marksmanship, close quarters combat, finances, and a great deal of tricks necessary to being a bounty hunter. In that regard, many criminals may look at members of the Holy Church as easy targets, due to misconceptions with other various religious groups and their 'do no harm' policies. The Holy Church of Paradise has no such qualms, and each child at the age of ten is already well equipped with the emotionless efficiency required to kill another human being. The Story: There is a station that nobody goes to, but many people leave. It is the Station of the Holy Church of Paradise. Nobody enters, so nobody is quite sure where the fresh blood comes from. Some believe they important orphans from all over the world. Orphans shipped along the train tracks all the way to the Holy Church of Paradise. Raised there by the Nuns, and guided on their holy journey. The journey of course being that when they reach the age of 20, each is given a staff, a revolver (made by the master smith who lives in the forges below the town) and a holy book. They are to travel to each station, and spread the holy word. Doing good deeds, collecting the bounties on evil men, and then leaving town. Why? Because the hundreds of young men who leave every year from that town seek only one thing. Paradise. Paradise was built along those railways. Somewhere. A beautiful land that belongs to mankind, and left there by God to welcome them to their new home. Priest Saul the 27th is one of many who grew up this way. And was sent out to find Paradise. Quirks: Hands out pamphlets of the Holy Church of Paradise. Even to dead bodies, since they may need it on being reincarnated.
Origins The Holy Church began over 300 years ago. Beginning with crossbows and bows and arrows. It was originally a small group of clergymen who became disenfranchised with the church's ideas of "Paradise being a reward for any who do good deeds." Instead, they proposed a different theory. Paradise belongs only to those who seek it out, and spend their lives in that pursuit. One can argue they meant it metaphorically, but there is no doubt that some in this new-found church believed it to be a physical place. These believers became the head of church, and began extreme radicalization of the church. Over the first one hundred years of the Church of Paradise's existance, they managed to develop an area that would become known in many circles, as "The Station where nobody goes, but believers leave." Naming Orphans Oddly enough, the Holy Church manages to collect young boys and girls who are orphaned by war, or other such means at their doors. They are given a holy name when they turn 10, around the age the first part of their training is complete. Each name comes from a former member of the founding one hundred clergymen. Names like Gregory, Francis, Elizabeth, and Mary, are never in short supply. As such, each is also given a number. Such as Francis the 25th, or Elizabeth the 52nd. If a member of the church manages to find Paradise (only done once as the records say) then the name of the one who finds it will be marked with a star, and never used again. As they have completed their journey. (The first to do so went by the name Peter.) Training Each member of the church is educated in the traditional ways. Books, teaching, and angry nuns are never in short supply. It is only when a child turns ten that the first part of their education is complete. Two boys or girls are brought into a room, and each is handed a gun. The first to kill the other is the winner. (Fastest giving-of-the-gun-to-murder record is 1.5 seconds, held by the still active Saint Isaac the 34th.) Only then are they given their holy name, and become true members of the church. From there, they are beaten with whips and clubs. Trained to bare cruel and unusual conditions, and to kill a man without hesitation. Boys and girls are trained by classical quickdraw methods, or in other cases, how to dismember a man with a pocket knife. The children that go in, always come out with a smile. A well conditioned smile.
