Open-faced sandwiches are weird. You can blame my home state for the [url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horseshoe_sandwich]horseshoe sandwich[/url], which is really only a sandwich in name only. With all the different variations of a horseshoe, it basically becomes the "how much can we pile onto this" sandwich.
