Background:
Hector O’Brien was raised in Las Vegas by his single father and never knew his mother. Whenever Hector asked, his father would only ever tell him “lady luck”. He only assumed that he meant that his mom was a gambler just like his dad, his fortune was made on the Vegas Strip, after all. They lived a life of fair luxury, Hector was enrolled in a nice private school and his dad never had to work for their bills. It wasn’t until Hector started to come of age that this would all turn around. Suddenly, Hector lost everything. A night of bad cards lost a large sum of the winnings they had saved up, someone broke into their home and stole a lot more. Soon they lost their home, Hector had to start going to public school, and his dad had to take up a normal job. They lived in their car for a while and things never seemed to get better from there. Lady luck abandoned them for the first time. One day, Hector waited outside of school to be picked up by his dad but he never came, and he got a phone call he never wanted to hear. His dad died in a serious car accident caused by a drunk tourist celebrating his winnings at the strip. All he could think to do is run, and he ran as far as he could away from the strip. He couldn’t imagine a life without his dad there with him. He lived in hiding for months, homeless, not wanting to be found and placed in foster care. Even then, his luck never turned. He started seeing things not of this world, creatures he thought were just myth. Initially he thought he was going crazy. Then, for the first time, his mother appeared to him. Tyche, as she announced herself, the goddess of luck. And his mother. Hector was skeptical, but what his dad said finally made sense to him. He lept and hugged his immortal parent, not a fear in his heart. She told him of camp half-blood, where he could live safely and in her view. And before he left on the journey there she gifted him a necklace. Nemesis, her sister, caused him all of this grief when she found out that he was the son of Tyche. But as long as he always wear that necklace, he would be forever invisible to Nemesis. Hector now lives semi-permanently in the Tyche cabin in camp half-blood, where he never seems to lose a coin flip.
