Nikolaas was born to Dutch immigrants who had originally settled in the southern Canada, before moving farther into the wilderness to become trappers as a way to make a living. Nikolaas grew up learning how to hunt and trap as a way to survive and his father taught him about all the different kinds of animals that roamed the lands. He lived a fairly normal early life as normal as a hunter could have in the Canadian wilderness facing wild animals. 

Nikolaas’ powers manifested when he was nineteen during an expedition deep into the Canadian wilderness with a group of explorers. He had been hired to take them deep into the forest so that they could catalog and study the various types of plants and animals in the area. One day while butchering a fresh grizzly bear for the team, he decided to cook and eat the heart for himself as it was always his favorite part of the bear. The next thing he remembers is that he was waking up in the middle of their camp with blood on his hands and it looked like a bear had rampaged through their camp killing everyone. It didn't take him more than a few days to figure out that he was one of the unholy that the people in town had been talking about. He decided to bury the bodies in the wilderness and reported in town that they had all perished in a wild animal attack which wasn't all that uncommon. 

Over the next few years, Nikolaas tested out his abilities in the wilderness of Canada. It was around that time that people started talking about weird creatures appearing in the forest outside of town. The British army was sent into the wilderness because of these stories as any rumors of an unholy was to be taken seriously. This is how Nikolaas ended up in the Government's custody as it took the army several years to catch up with him, but eventually he ended up in a cell in Toronto which was the capital at the time.

In late 1852, Nikolaas was loaded onto a Naval ship bound for London as he was to face the courts in London for his curse. Upon arriving in London, rumors of war were spreading and the British were forming a group of Unholy for the army to utilize if war broke out. Nikolaas was given the choice of the hangman's noose or to join the Unholy Army to repent for the trumped up charges against him back in his homeland. This forced him to serve during the Crimean War as a forward scout and information gatherer using his enhanced senses and ruthless methods to get the information that was needed.

After the war, Nikolaas had served his time for the crimes against him and not wanting to return to Canada he started to look for work around Britain. That was when he was approached by the  Queen's Hand and was offered a job to use his abilities for the crown and they would defend him from the public option.

Description:
Nikolaas has the power to imbue himself with the abilities of the animals that he has consumed. He goes through a type of transformation similar to the mythical werewolf where he takes on characteristics of the animals while keeping his human senses somewhat intact. He is able to store the animal's powers indefinitely within himself, but he is only able to use the abilities of mammals and no other type of creature. There doesn't seem to be a sort of time limit on his ability, but the longer he stays out of his human form the more feral his mind becomes until he eventually loses himself to his beast side. The only way for him to revert back to normal at this point is to lose consciousnesses or for something familiar to snap him out of his haze.
