Standing at exactly 185 centimetres with no sign of stopping, he towers over the majority of his peers. Due to his impressive stature, he’s a little lanky, but all the mandatory training at AS Ent keeps him from looking too much like a newborn giraffe. It must be noted, however, that like a newborn giraffe, he’s really quite clumsy. Jasper still isn’t quite used to his newfound height, and often finds himself knocking over things, bumping into people — sometimes even tripping over his own feet. Suffice to say, he’s not a great dancer. Of course, it should be obvious to anyone that Jasper looks far different from your average Korean. Curly-haired and dark-skinned, he often gets strange looks from people out in public, even when he’s just sitting by himself, minding his own business. Most of the time, Jasper’s features are set in what can only be called a Resting Bitch Face™, which has earned a rather erroneous reputation among his fellow trainees for being unapproachable. But once you actually strike up a conversation with him, you’ll find that he’s a guy who smiles easily and sincerely.
ᴇxᴘᴇʀᴛɪsᴇ ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
Singing Songwriting Guitar English
ʙᴀᴄᴋɢʀᴏᴜɴᴅ ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
Born to a Nigerian-American mother and a Korean father, life hasn’t always been easy for Jasper Nam. Much of his formative years were spent in Seoul — Itaewon, to be exact. Even from an early age, he knew he was different from his peers. It was obvious in the way the other children whispered behind his back, heeding their parents’ advice to stay away from him. For a long time, the young Jasper couldn’t quite figure out why the other kids were making fun of him, and his parents always tried their best to shield him from the worst of it. But eventually, he learned about how people discriminated against others just because they were different from them. Whatever friends he did have in his childhood were few and far between, but they were good friends, friends who stuck by his side no matter what, and that was enough. At age 9, Jasper and his parents moved to the United States after his father received a job opportunity at a tech company based in Sacramento, California. To say that it was a change… well, that would be the understatement of the century. As the new kid on the block, he already stuck out like a sore thumb. This led to a few problems adjusting to his new school and surroundings, and the language barrier didn’t help one bit. Thanks to his mother, he spoke some English, but he wasn’t as fluent as he should’ve been, except when he was singing. Growing up, his parents exposed him to a variety of music – everything from H.O.T to Stevie Wonder – but his favorite was always R&B. As a child, he liked singing along to whatever was playing, even if he didn’t know the lyrics. Jasper’s parents, in an attempt to get him out of his shell, allowed him to start taking vocal lessons. It was difficult, at first. He was too shy to sing in front of his voice coach, a complete stranger; but slowly, after much coaxing from his parents and teacher, he finally showed them what he could do. For the most part, his parents’ plan worked. He opened up at school, made a conscious effort to mingle instead of keeping to himself all day. Hell, he even picked up the guitar after finding out who Jimi Hendrix was. Music gave him the confidence to break free of his nervous, soft-spoken self, but that wasn’t the end of it. He began writing his own songs in 7th grade, songs that he would perform and share online along with some covers. The feedback wasn’t always positive, but he just told himself that he was doing what he loved, and improving all the while. Fast forward a few years, the then fifteen year-old Jasper decided to submit a video audition for the upcoming season of K-pop Star. It was a nerve-wracking wait, but three weeks later, he received an email saying he’d gotten through the preliminary auditions, and asked him to come for the next round of auditions in Seoul. Jasper begged his parents to let him go, and after promising do all his chores for the next two months, he found himself on a flight headed for Incheon International, his guitar and suitcase stowed safely away in the overhead compartment. Jasper passed the next few stages as well, until finally, he ended up onstage in front of a live studio audience. Despite his initial stage fright, the judges seemed to like what he had to offer, and he made it into the Top 10. While he never expected to get this far, it was still disappointing when he got eliminated right before the semifinals. Fortunately, his brief stint on K-pop Star was enough to get the attention of one AS Entertainment, who offered him a contract to train there. It was a difficult decision, one that he and his parents agonised over, but in the end, he chose to accept it. Since then, he has been training at AS Ent. Some think he got in the easy way through a reality show, but he tries not to let their criticism affect him too much.
ᴘᴇʀsᴏɴᴀʟɪᴛʏ ▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
Jasper often takes the role of “sidekick” in interpersonal relationships. He doesn’t subconsciously yearn to be in the spotlight, but is instead comfortable in a supporting role. He’s always been sort of a wallflower, after all, though he has become less so in recent years. It should be said, however, that there are some things that still haven’t changed. He’s still incredibly hard-working, an incurable optimist, and a really great friend. It is his belief that when you’re good to people, people are good to you in return. At the very core of his personality, he’s kind of a bleeding heart, and often puts the needs of others above his own. Once you give him a good reason to trust you, he’ll stay by your side and stick up for you no matter what, even when he knows you’re in the wrong. His impulsiveness is another key trait, making decisions with little thought of how he’s going to accomplish it, or what the consequences might be, but he’s hard-working enough that once he makes a decision, he sticks to it and sees it through to the end. He also prides himself on being creative; he loves music, singing, and anything else that allows him to express himself. While he generally makes it a point to avoid confrontation – and believe me, he’s very hard to anger – he can get a little snappy when people start poking into his personal affairs. Still, he’s never purposefully malicious, he just doesn’t like feeling vulnerable. He has also developed a need for closeness and reassurance in his relationships, often coming across as pushy in his attempts to befriend someone. It’s not uncommon for him to find himself getting overly attached to anyone who shows him even the least bit of niceness.
