In a casual context, however, he can come off as timid or awkward; as if he isn't sure how to behave when he's not playing the role of ghoul investigator. Overall, he's generally polite and respectful, and can be quite amiable in interpersonal relations once a rapport has been established, albeit a tad rigid or boring. He has exhibited a tendency to view incompetence or overwhelmingly lax demeanors with notable disdain, but such opinions are usually kept to himself rather than openly shared.

[indent]Hanegawa, similarly to many investigator candidates, comes from a background of family working in the CCG, although limited in scope. His father worked as a minor bureau investigator in a CCG branch office, and had little field or combat experience. Interviews suggest that he and his father are not close. Hanegawa himself spent his childhood in the 3rd Ward along with a younger brother, during which he performed exceptionally in school and never exhibited any glaring behavioral issues. Family interviews and psych evaluations indicate that he did not have many friends growing up and was a rather lonely child. He is not known to have been involved in any ghoul-related incidents, leading to an ambiguous motivation behind his becoming an investigator. When questioned, he maintains that he simply believes humanity should not have to live in fear of another species when they are perfectly capable of combating it.

[indent]Investigator Hanegawa's academy records show that he enlisted as a standard ghoul investigator and completed the first year of the training program with impressive academic scores. His physical evaluations were adequate and well within passing range, however they fell below average when compared to the rest of the class. During this time, Investigator Hanegawa applied for candidacy in the Quinx Program - likely to compensate for the aforementioned subpar physical scores - and was accepted after preliminary screening. Afterwards, he was transferred to the Quinx training program for the remainder of his academic career. Although he performed effectively during training, he lacks experience and his competence in the field has not yet been fully assessed.

[indent]The subject's implanted kagune manifests as a wide, shield-like projection that drapes over the left arm, capable of providing cover for much of the subject's body in a proper stance. Although it appears to be suited toward a primarily defensive role, small ridges line the edges and outward surface of the kagune, which can be utilized for offensive striking. The original host ghoul demonstrated the capacity to extend the ridges into more dangerous offensive structures, however the quinx subject has yet to replicate this.
