Giima and his father were abandoned by his mother when he was just a baby, so the only thing he has of her is an old picture his dad gave him. His father treated him like a normal child, although he was slightly overprotective if Giima went anywhere near a girl. However, his father had to leave the country to take care of a dying relative but Saiyuri would not let Giima leave, so he was sent to live with Daisuke instead. Giima was initially wary of him because he was the dog, but his friendliness helped Giima warm up to him quickly. However is afraid of Hiroki and Touya, the cat and snake, but while he tries to avoid Touya as much as possible, Giima can't help but lash out at Hiroki. The curse as the rat makes him irrationally despise the cat and he thinks Hiroki is the worst member of the zodiac.

Because mice are nocturnal creatures, Giima enjoys taking long walks at night and absolutely hates the mornings. His eyesight is poor so he wears contacts, but his senses of smell and hearing are better than normal humans. He also likes closed spaces and it is common to see him bundled up in a large nest of blankets. His best friend is Natsuki Kirijo, who likes to pretend he is a superhero named splendidSTAR, and is one of the few noncursed people who he is friends with, though Natsuki has no idea about Giima's curse.
