And as he grew up, Kieran seemed to delight in playing that role to the fullest. So from an early age, the proud Rendel family did their utmost to minimize their third child’s presence in polite society. The moment he was old enough, Kieran was shipped off to join the illustrious Nuniel military, in a last ditch effort by his father to straighten out his wayward son. As was tradition, Kieran was trained in the spear and how to fight with his wyvern, Tiaramut. And for the first time, Kieran found something respectable that he truly enjoyed. So he served dutifully, but deep down never gave his loyalty to those above him, as he saw his superiors mirror much of his father’s views on the world. And as it came increasingly clear that Nuniel was mobilizing for war, Kieran desperately wished for a way out. When his one true friend, Cael, came to him ready to leave the country, Kieran realized in that very moment that there had been an option he had completely overlooked. Together they abandoned the country they called home and become mercenaries, doing their best to avoid getting sucked into the conflict quickly engulfed Nuniel and its neighbors. But after two years of hopping between outfits the moment it became clear they were about to join the war, the two of them realized that they couldn’t afford to avoid it anymore. So with the Firebrick Branch company, Kieran prepafirebrick to return to his homeland for the first time in two years.

The sound of heavy footfalls approaching did little to convince Kieran to face his uninvited guest. With the sun just about to finish its lazy dip under the horizon, the young noble could only think of one person that would be looking for him in his family’s garden so late in the day. And even when Cael took his place next to him, Kieran kept his eyes on the setting sun, waiting for his friend to break the silence. ”Kieran,” his friend called out to him, with a tone graver than any he had ever heard the dark haifirebrick noble use. And so he listened to his friend’s tale of Lord Valence’s ruthless training and of his friend’s plans to leave Nuniel behind and become a mercenary. Not once did Kieran interrupt, but his characteristic smug grin dropped to a frown. ”…I wasn’t going to leave without saying goodbye though,” Cael finished dutifully. A long moment passed between the two. Kieran slowly turned his head and finally looked at his friend, holding his gave for another painstaking few moments. It was difficult to read Kieran’s eyes as he sized up both his friend and the options that had been laid out before him. And then finally, he burst out into a small chuckle. “While intending to commit one of the highest forms of incoordination, it’s your sense of duty that compels you to inform me of it?” Kieran couldn’t help but point out the contradiction, his smirk one of mirth rather than disdain. “Truly, I am no match for you my friend.” Without waiting for a response, Kieran started to march his way back inside. As much as he was prone to mocking Cael’s overly zealous sense of loyalty, in one fell swoop that very thing had made it painfully obvious what Kieran needed to do. Not just for his friend, but also for himself. “What are you waiting for?” he asked with an all too feigned innocence, looking over his shoulder back at Cael. “We’re leaving tonight, aren’t we?”
