[@Jett Ryu]: Actually, I'd avoided those as examples specifically because, while this is certainly darker then, say, Precure, I wouldn't compare it to Madoka Magica either.

Tonally I'd say this finds some sort of middle ground between them, but that doesn't help given what a vast gap between the two there is. ^^;

I don't know if Nanoha or Symphogear are quite the right comparison either, but I suppose they're closer.
