It’s a trope when it’s shoehorned into a character and the writer isn’t capable of making that characters story interesting without constantly relying on the “trope.” We’re talking about people that fought for their country and moved on with their lives not actively serving military members that walked off base with an armory during the apocalypse.

 It shouldn’t matter what they were before the story started. It’s all about what happens after it starts.
