His mother, Feldra was one of the main architects and designers when the capital was being expanded upon for the second time, and afterwards took to more scholarly work. Her renown soon grew and she became a part of the more prestigious group of scholars, teachers, and philosophers that worked alongside the council. This is how she met Rune’s father. He was a rather handsome and quiet elf named Erion who’s reserved nature caught her attention the most. In her persistence she finally gained his attention. It was only deeper into their relationship that he revealed his true nature. He was one of the dragons that centuries before had fled Vakthura, and had been wandering until he finally settled among the elves like a few of his other brethren. Unlike some of them, he had chosen to keep his identity a secret to all, including the council. Despite the unknown, Arendal was born perfectly healthy, and otherwise inconspicuously. He was the pride of both of his parents, but they both feared that Erion’s identity would be revealed on accident. So they took to hovering and being overprotective. For a while his parents were cautious, both unsure of the possible outcomes of their decision. After awhile it became apparent that there were going to be issues. During a fit, more draconic aspects appeared, and remained. For a while they had to keep him hidden, trying to figure out how to conceal what had appeared. Eventually, the dragon like features disappeared on their own, leaving his parents flustered. For most of his younger years he was kept in close proximity of his parents, out of sight from a lot of people. Every now and again tantrums or fits of excitement would reveal the things they tried to keep hidden. So they did their best to keep him calm and pacified. When he was old enough to understand, they began telling him why it was important to stay calm. He was never ignorant of his heritage, and he knew that his situation was special. That didn’t make it any easier on him though. As he got a little older, more risks were taken by finally allowing him out with them without extreme caution. Soon after his education started. With the greatest tutors at his disposal he had a hefty education that expanded over the finest of what the capital had to offer. His father also educated him about dragon culture, and a deeper history that had been mostly lost due to all of the death and secrecy. As the years went on, Arendal found that he had a strong aptitude for fire magics. Wanting to pursue and hone his natural talent he spoke with his parents about it. They both agreed that it was too risky for him to train in any form of combat magic. Disheartened they tried to get him to take up other forms of magic, telling him that he could train in whatever else he could think of. Arendal understood the reasoning behind his parent’s forbidding him to take up something that would potentially elicit too much emotion. Already it was straining enough to constantly contain himself. It wasn’t fair or natural for him to continuously conceal himself like he did, and a part of him resented it deeply. He was never ashamed of his parents though, respecting them and their decisions, knowing how important it was to both of them to keep his father’s secret. For a while he did try other things, but it was clear that he had his heart set on fire, so he began looking for teachers on his own. In his search he tried to avoid direct affiliates with his parents, not wanting them to find out. He found a teacher who agreed to keep his training subtle, paying for it by doing mundane tasks and errands. His teacher was astounded by how quickly that he picked up on everything that he was taught, with precision and strength that marked him as a prodigy. Eventually his parents found out. His father was more understanding, knowing deep down that it was unfair. His mother was less so, worried that his recklessness was going to cost them. So he ceased his training, going back to attempting to learn other things. As he jumped around he picked up bits and pieces of a lot of different magics, never really satisfied. As he became more independent he was left feeling empty. Everyone he met was kept at arm’s length, never allowing anyone to really get to know him. He felt as though he was wasting his time, and was beginning to grow restless. The city held little appeal for him, and he was beginning to feel suffocated. At home he was agitated, and a lot of times had to spend a lot of time meditating to refrain from slipping up. Confiding in his father proved to be relieving. They both held a resentment for the constant facade, the constant confinement, the lack of freedom. So, he made the decision to leave home. This worried his mother, but his father assured her that it was the best thing for him. So he left home, with no general purpose in mind. The freedom proved to be liberating. At long last he was able to do things that he had been forbidden to do. Fire was at his disposal, and he sought out teachers wherever he went. He learned various ways to control fire, learning techniques from elves, dwarves, and humans alike. As he travelled, he refrained from telling anyone his true name, as to not be traced back to his family if there ever was a slip up. So he simply called himself Rune. In his travels he learned more about the atrocities that the humans of Brevyon committed against his father’s kind, and how intolerant and closed off the destroyed kingdom had become. There was a growing resentment for these people, thinking them ignorant and cruel, and it began to have an effect on how he looked at the majority of humankind. As he roamed, he kept himself fed by doing simple tasks for people like delivering letters or small packages from time to time, gaining a rather respectable reputation that always landed him work wherever he went. Such a simple life was hardly fitting to someone of his higher status, but he sought to escape the unhappiness that had plagued him for so long. While he was on the road one day he was knocked unconscious and dragged off to a bandit camp close to the border of Grimlaw. When he woke he was tied alongside a few other people. The bandits were using their captives to draw creatures from Grimlaw to kill. Arendal was furious, burning through his bindings and freeing the other captives under the cover of darkness. As much as he wanted to keep himself calm and under control the situation did not warrant a calm reaction. Never before had he experienced so much raw emotion, and its effects were devastating. Every single person within the bandit’s group was burned alive until there was nothing left but ash. As he walked through the flames, there was a feeling of liberation, followed by deep guilt. This is where he gained his title of Flame Speaker, because in the chaos the only thing that the captives saw before the whole camp was engulfed was the elf breathing fire. Thankfully they had not seen anything else aside from that, because he had to spend a great deal of time while in the fire trying to conceal himself once again. Finally emerging from the dying enferno, clothes burned off, he travelled with the others through the night until they reached the road again. It didn’t take long for news of what he had done to spread, further pushing him to travel far and frequently. The sensation lingered with him though, the overwhelming feeling, the surge of emotion. It was tantalizing. Subduing any strong emotion all his life has lead to a constant state of control that he exercises over himself. When he speaks though, it is in a way that demands attention. There is subtle charm and a sense of deep rooted trouble that becomes more apparent. There is an air of thoughtfulness about him, and deeper contemplation. He chooses his words carefully, and is much smarter than he lets on. To most he appears friendly enough, but overall seems very enigmatic and withdrawn from close relationships. An inside conflict is always present within him, maintaining his facade at all times taking a toll on him. There is a growing desire to just let his emotions run free, regardless of the consequences. Obligation to his family prevents him from doing so though, and he has already ostracized himself because of it. One thing that he became very good at through teaching himself was conflict resolution. During his travels he stopped many a bar fight or quarrel. Those who know him generally see him as a responsible and trustworthy person, and for a while he was just everyone’s acquaintance that sort of blended into the background. Until more and more people began to find out about his affinity for fire. For most it just increased the mystery.
