Taking into account what Pirouette has already said, which is essentially exactly what I was going to say, I should also add that we already have a mutant who has an ability which grants them buffs and effects depending on external forces. 

To give you a straight answer, the mutation you have in mind, while cool in its own rights, does not work for this setting. It's very Zelda: Majora's Mask, which might have been an inspiration. However, the ability does not work, I am afraid.
