His head felt like it had been split by an axe, an intense pain radiating from the back of his skull all the way through to a point behind his eyes; he raised a hand to his face, pressing a palm to his forehead as he tried to sit up. “You’re awake.” He resisted the urge to turn around, knowing it would only cause him more pain. It was easy to recognise the voice of his master even without looking to see his face anyway, the deep bass tones being a continual presence in his life the past few years. Pulling himself up into a sitting position Ryuhei winced as he felt his ribs complain, along with several smaller twinges of pain along his arms. He felt like he had been through another kumite and lost. “What happened?” “We were attacked.” Now he did turn to face his master, finding the older man also sitting down and looking just as bad as he felt, if not worse. A set of bloodied bandages were wrapped around his middle, a trickle of dried blood stained the left side of his mouth and his arms and torso were covered in bruises. Even more than that, the dojo they were sitting in was completely trashed; the hole in the ceiling was the worst of the damage by far, but there were small craters and cracks in several places on the floor and a few large dents or holes in the walls as well. “Give it time. It will come back to you.” They weren’t alone. Several of the older and more experienced students were in the room with them; he just hadn’t noticed them at first. They walked around, picking up and clearing out rubble or stood attentively off by Goichi’s side; there were a couple standing near him as well, both sending the occasional worried glance his way. Presumably there were there in case it looked like he needed help. Crossing his legs, Ryuhei placed an elbow on one knee and rest his head in the palm of his hand. He closed his eyes and tried to think of the last thing he could remember. The news report, Parsley City, Master Goichi sending them outside, the streak of yellow light hitting the dojo, the fight, Master Goichi being injured… “That alien. What happened after I was knocked out?” “Nothing. He just left.” Goichi began to shift, trying to find a more comfortable position, only to wince in pain as he began to cough harshly. One of the students standing near him rushed to his side to help, only to be pushed away; Ryuhei could see red stains on his hand as he did so. “He must have thought us beaten or as good as dead and saw no reason to finish us off. After he left the student returned and patched me up. What a terrible teacher I must be; none of my students can follow even a simple order to stay away.” Ryuhei couldn’t help but grin even given the dire circumstances; he might have tried to put up a front of being annoyed at their disobedience, but Ryuhei could tell that his master was grateful that they had returned as well as being pleased that they had cared enough to do so. His mirth faded quickly however, as his thoughts turned back to Dyce and what the alien had said. “Dyce… he’s not going to stop with just Parsley City. He’s going to wipe out everyone.” “I know.” “I can’t let him do that.” “…I know.” There was a pause as both student and master put of saying what needed to be said next. “I won’t be able to help you in this state.” “I know. I’m doing it anyway.” “You’re not strong enough to beat him by yourself. You’ll lose.” It didn’t need to be said what losing meant in this situation. “I know… I’m doing it anyway. It’ll be the same result if no-one stops him anyway; I want to at least give it my best shot.” Goichi nodded approvingly before lapsing into another silence. After a couple of minutes the older martial artist raised head and turned to face north. “He’s coming this way again; he’s been flying all over the place, probably eliminating other strong fighters like us. If you’re going to face him, now is your chance. With any luck you won’t be alone.”
