Its power hidden in the datal dimension of ᴋᴀʀᴇɴ'ꜱ phone. Her mana crystal, when dormant, is a .WAV file nestled in the ‘Music’ app among an eclectic library: 80’s city and synthpop; acid jazz; math rock from further East; hardcore punk from the West. Activated, the mana crystal runs magic through her headphones to form the signature headpiece of her magical girl costume; a walkman-esque device studded fairy kei-style hangs from her waist. That elusive power presents itself to her, after so long. All she has to do is hit play. ᴠɪʀᴛᴜᴇ — Justice; impartiality, equity, balance, honor. It means a lot of weighted things to ᴋᴀʀᴇɴ at this point of her life, many of which she’s been denied in her “career.” Maybe justice is a response, she’s thinking — because if someone commits an injustice, there ought to be a karmic response. Always. Because the world would be less of a mess if people were held accountable for their actions, and she holds to this more than ever with quiet, impassioned resolve.
ʜɪꜱᴛᴏʀʏ — In short, she’s been here before: offered, apparently out of admiration, something of a pipe dream, picturesque and permanent and perfect, a convenient contract with one condition, just one. Though what this Keeper is saying, it’s different this time. Once, ᴋᴀʀᴇɴ was an ordinary, if talented, teenage girl. She found her voice as a twelve-year-old, a multi-instrumentalist and aspiring songwriter from a low-income family: a much younger brother, a single, busy, working mother scraping together what she could for the both of them. She wanted to make them proud. Worked hard, then salvaged the courage to perform at a young talent convention — lost, but won the heart of an onlooking manager who approached her with a lifetime opportunity: a music career. Once, “ᴄᴇʀɪꜱ," the "cute one" of a three-part junior idol group, appeared on real-life, genuine television for her family to watch. She was on the precipice of her dream, to be an artist, and found her true best friends onstage. All she needed was to sacrifice her time and her family for a schedule choked with public appearances, practices, and televised interviews. If she sacrificed herself, and sold herself, in those unspeakable ways she's sick to death of describing. Then, ᴜᴇᴛꜱᴜᴋɪ really found her voice. She blew the whistle and ruined everything, exposed the pipe dream for what it was, so that she and her friends fell into obscurity, free, muted. They would never be musicians without a manager, and their manager was behind bars. Now, ᴜᴇᴛꜱᴜᴋɪ is expected to return to her ordinary life. Despite how she can’t sleep. Despite how she isn’t songwriting anymore. What happened to that imaginative girl, a prodigy who excelled at her schoolwork — her grades dropped with her focus, and she’s had to be pulled out of school on “medical leave.” She’s been tossing, turning, mulling something in her mind for a long time; the Keeper is the only one who’s been able to rouse her with a call to action, a purpose. Because there are others in Kami City suffering silently like her and her old friends in this city. What they need is an idol — that’s what she needs to be.
