Chinami has always been an inquisitive girl, needing to know the hows, whens, and whys of things. She’s always been particularly interested in the ocean, so it’s only fitting she’d receive a curious proposition by the seaside… Magic Marvelous Creatures of the Past! Chinami can conjure up skeletal familiars of animals that once inhabited the ocean. Given her extreme interest in marine paleontology, her potential familiars cover a wide range of creatures, from tiny fish to massive whales and prehistoric reptiles. Being a magical girl’s familiar has its perks, too: all of the creatures Chinami summons can swim through the air, ignoring pesky inconveniences like gravity. Some people might call her boney buds creepy, but Chinami thinks they’re pretty swell. Diving Deeper Depths There are many valuable discoveries to be made at the bottom of the sea, and Chinami is determined to see all of them. Through the wonders of magic, she can breathe underwater! In fact, water cannot harm her in any way. A Brief History of Life Chinami has spent a lot of time learning about living things, and being a Magical Girl means she can learn even more! If she touches a living (or once-living) thing, she can look into its past by simply closing her eyes. When she uses this power, she experiences the past through the senses of the creature she is touching. If the creature moves away, though, the connection is lost. History Chinami was raised by her grandparents from a very young age. Her father had never been around, skipping town shortly after her birth, and her mother had a host of mental problems that ultimately made her unfit to be a parent. Thankfully, Chinami’s grandparents were good, kind people who took their granddaughter in without the slightest hesitation. Chinami’s grandfather was a simple man, working as the head of janitorial services at a local aquarium. Her grandmother, meanwhile, was a beloved community librarian. Visiting the aquarium as a child awoke a deep interest in the sea, and despite her young age, Chinami took to studying everything she could find about the ocean and all its wonderful inhabitants. She would spend long hours with her grandmother at the library, poring over books about the ocean. It was through these studies that she learned about the amazing sorts of creatures that had once dwelled within the sea: great sea-serpents and ancient whales swam through her dreams at night. Once she was old enough, she began taking classes at the aquarium in addition to her school work, and learned that the field she was so interested in was called marine paleontology. Of course, marine paleontology is a rather odd hobby for a young girl to take up, and her feverish enthusiasm about the subject didn’t make her particularly popular at school. The other children took to calling her “Fishbones”, and generally treating her as an outcast. Still, Chinami’s dedication remained unwavering, and she studied hard, doing very well in her scholarly endeavors. Still, Chinami was more than a bit lonely. Her only real friend was the sea, and she would spend the evenings walking along the coastline and skipping stones out into the water, pondering what sorts of mysteries surely slept beneath that great blue expanse. As luck would have it, though, one such evening her ponderings were interrupted by a strange visitor. The little creature called itself a “Keeper”, and told her about all sorts of curiosities she’d never dreamed of. Furthermore, it told her that with a simple contract, she could gain magical powers that would let her pursue her curiosity even further. To top it all off, she was certain to make friends, after all, Magical Girls had lots of friends! All she had to do was fight some monsters called Vices. She pondered over the offer for a while, but ultimately her curiosity got the best of her.
