[indent]Shawna was born in Monroe, Wisconsin, the third child to Martin, an engineer specializing in restaurant machinery, and Ramona, a culinary arts teacher at Blackhawk Tech. It looked like a simple food-based existence in America's Dairyland until Martin connected on a $236 million Powerball ticket in 2004. Flush with cash for the first time, the Josis packed up and headed south, settling in Palm Beach where Ramona opened a specialty bake shop known for its decadent chocolate fillings, while Martin found a job with a local tech firm.

Shawna was two when the family moved so she has no recollection of her roots in Wisconsin, but she did show the same advanced intelligence at a young age that became common in the family. She blitzed through the lower grades, much as her older siblings did, showing great aptitude for whatever subject her teachers challenged her with. However, as she grew older, it became more of a strain for her to try and keep up with the advanced coursework, especially with her older siblings setting the Ivy League on fire.
 
In her junior year, it came to a head during her Pre-Calculus final. As she sat in the gymnasium, trying to work out the various equations, it just ceased to click in her mind. As the final bell rang, she bolted from her desk and out onto the beach where she stood, screaming in vain at the ocean in frustration. Then, a moment of clarity came. Why was she doing all this? What was the point if she wasn't enjoying life, enjoying the riches her family had gained? Why should she keep this up?

Shawna spent her summer doing absolutely nothing, paying lip service to the college prep courses her parents were convinced she would still need, as if the 34 on the Pre-Calc final was just a blip on the radar. She would disappear for days at a time, telling her parents she was going to various camps to study, when in reality she was trying to shake the image of a nerd in the high-school scene she avoided for years. She is still trying, not sure she is succeeding, but definitely enjoying cramming coolers in her mouth more than cramming facts about Planck's Constant into her brain.[/indent]
