They had attended Shake The Ground’s Regional Dance Competition, participating with three solos, two duets and one group dance. Kellie Anne Nicholson had been awarded one of the solos and was a participant of the group dance. By the end of the competition, she had walked away with the overall high score solo of the day thanks to her ‘flawless technique and heartfelt performance’ as the judges put it. The routine, performed to the tune of Haley Reinhart’s ‘Undone’ was about the experience of losing love, the pain it brings, and the feelings of sadness sprinkled with regret and helplessness. It was, appropriately titled, ‘Max’. Still savoring her victory, a jubilous Kellie Anne arrived at her home clutching her trophy and overnight bag. Smiling, the young woman placed her prize on one of the available spots on her Victory Shelf, dropped her bag by the foot of her bed and threw herself onto the mattress. After a few seconds of simply rolling around the bed after being away, Kellie pulled out her iPhone from her jean shorts’ back pocket, unlocked it and began to scroll through her social media apps. First had been Facebook, where she laughed out loud to the latest memes and caught up with some of the tea of Homecoming. Next had been Instagram, where the multimedia evidence of her classmates in the best and worst moments of the night was plastered all over the profiles of the attendees. Finally, Kellie hopped on Twitter, where she knew the real tea would be spilled. For better or worse, she didn’t have to spend too much time scrolling down her feed when a tweet mentioning a familiar surname caught her attention: Kellie Anne tightly pursed her lips together, brown eyes reading over Beth’s tweet over and over until the suggestive words became nothing but a blur. The sounds of the world faded away into white noise as the first wave of tears hit her, running fast and hot down her cheeks. She took a few seconds to stare at the ceiling, trying to blink away the tears, the images of Max and Beth doing all the things she and he used to do together, and the painful feeling of her heart shriveling up like a decaying rose. Taking a deep breath, the young woman wiped her face with the sleeve of her sweater, and felt another pang in her chest when she realized she was wearing Max’ favorite ‘Asgard Fitness’ hoodie. Letting out a growl of frustration, Kellie violently tore the hoodie off from her body and threw it towards the furthest corner of her room, watching as it hit the wall and slid down to the hardwood floor. And with her heart breaking all over again, the girl curled up in the middle of her bed and began to sob.
