Our are characters new trainers, or can they be established already?

Do we start out with a full team of Pokémon? Or only one? Or more than one but less than six?

The Pokémon trainer RPs I’ve been in that had contests in them have never made it to an actual contest. They end up dying somewhere around the first Gym. So I’m curious how a contest in an RP setting would work
