Those fortunate enough to survive gain a unique physique that possesses a powerful adaptive resistance to noxious substances and the ability to generate poisons, toxins, and venom of their own with the use of their chakra and bodily substances; these come with a variety of effects, ranging from blurring of vision, body weakness to paralysis, and for the more potent ones, death. 

Aesthetic changes of those who successfully undergo this tradition would include pale white hair, porcelain skin, and blood-red eyes. Because of the Shiren Clan's unique abilities, its members are characterized not only by their knowledge on toxicology and utilization of various toxins, but their precision and mastery of chakra moulding, which is a prerequisite in creating poisons. They are known to be proficient in the medical arts and are often seen caring for insects, animals, and plants that produce poison or possess poison-like properties. 

Being few in number, those from the Shiren Clan tend to avoid participating in actual combat to preserve their lineage and hidden techniques. However, he was still expected to participate in clan-related activities which are comprised of gardening and insect keeping along with development of medicinal products and poisonous tools. Dissatisfied with their clan's current status of simply supporting from the backlines, Dokumaru decided that it was about time someone stepped up; he would bring glory and honour not only to Kirigakure but to his clan during this time of war as well.
