My favourite way to describe the use of a semicolon is as a super-comma. Great also for lists with commas in the items:

"We visited cities all over Canada, including Calgary, Alberta; Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; and Halifax, Nova Scotia."
[sub][sub]supercomma[/sub][/sub]

I learned everything I know about semicolons [url=https://theoatmeal.com/comics/semicolon]here[/url] and I've actually had TAs compliment my use of them, so can confirm, will get you brownie points with the people who grade your papers.

Be warned, though; once you start using semicolons, you'll want to put them EVERYWHERE.
