Luke Godfrey
“Wait, really?” Luke questioned with an arched brow as Victoria declared not to hit him, definitely a first for Luke. Just a second ago she looked ready to tear him a new one and honestly he was prepared to take her on, but now here she is not throwing a single punch. It honestly felt a bit off, but what threw him off a bit more was when she continued speaking and not throwing out insults his way. Instead she seemed to be… concerned? Saying how she didn’t want him to go down the wrong path, how he could make something of himself when the fighting's done, hell she even mentioned his bad habit in not getting close with others and instead staying away from them. He started to feel a bit awkward now, his attempt to get under her skin to fight away his stress making him feel like a real dick, a rare feeling for the young soldier. Luke rubbed the back of his neck as she called herself a fuck up before taking out a metal flask. She didn’t seem that bad, but lots of people have their own demons. A light chuckle escaped him as she pointed out his drinking and shrugged. “It’s a bit of a tradition in my hometown to be a good drinker. Guess I didn’t show that last night though,” he said with a small sheepish smile. Luke began to feel his nerves relax a bit after she paused to take a swig from her flask, but as she spoke he had noticed her toy with a locket around her neck and felt a bit curious in what was inside. Soon his curiosity would be satisfied as she removed the locket and opened it to reveal a young child, a small girl from what he saw. Instantly his mind drifted towards his sisters and found himself staring at the photo for a few good seconds before she began to speak again. To his surprise she began to share her past and Luke found himself listening, keeping eye contact and doing his best to be respectful, another first for him. Becoming a thug at a young age, killing at fifteen, having her heart broken by some scumbag that left her alone with a child. Luke couldn’t help but tense up as the thought of this prick doing something like that to her, his mind briefly falling back to a dark memory and feeling sympathy for both Victoria and her child. As she finished Luke kept his gaze with hers, his body now at ease and his eyes the softest they have been ever since he joined the military. After a few seconds of silence he rubbed the back of his neck and sighed lightly. “Geez, really made me feel like an ass,” he chuckled bitterly, feeling a bit guilty in his attempts to get her riled up only a few moments ago. “Look, I… I’m sorry you had to go through shit like that, it must have been rough. I can only imagine how you felt through all of that,” he said before rubbing the back of his neck as his own troubled memories began to return, causing him to frown slightly and looking towards the ground as it all suddenly began to feel to heavy to hold in anymore. Hesitation rose into his chest as he briefly considered swallowing his troubles again and ending this conversation right here, but after hearing her story he just.... It didn’t feel right. If he decided to to keep it all bottle up again he would feel weak compared to Victoria who was able to tell him her past. With a deep sigh Luke looked back up to meet her gaze, a brief flash of hesitation in his eyes before steeling himself and speaking. “I… I can relate a bit, in having my own troubles I mean. I have my own demons from my youth and it all still fucks with me today. It even had a bit to do with my outburst with Diana back there, something I should have dealt with better,” he paused with his frown growing deeper. “It was because of my… the woman who was supposed to be my mother. Mommy issues I guess,” he chuckled lightly, sadness in his bitter humor. After one last flash of hesitation washed over him Luke took in a deep breath and began to relive that night. “It happened when I was around ten…”

January 16th, 1906EC Hamberg village. Luke Godfrey, 10 years old. “Gah!” Luke yelped in pain as his right hand erupted into a intense stinging pain. He clenched his teeth in pain as he clutched his hand with a hiss of anger and annoyance in both his injury and dropping the wheelbarrow of stones he had been gathering for most of the day. As the worn out and rusted wheelbarrow toppled to the ground, scattering the several heavy stones along the ground, he let out a heavy sigh before falling to one knee, still holding onto his injured hand. He clicked his tongue in annoyance as a few dribbles of blood escaped his clenched fist and ran down his arm. Slowly he opened his shaking hand and frowned once he saw a nasty open wound in the middle of his palm. The crimson blood mixed in well with his already dirty and worn out hands that were covered in cuts or bruises. “Shit,” he muttered in a dry voice before reaching to the back pockets of his old beat up jeans and pulling out a white rag. He tore the rag with his teeth and began to gradually wrap up his wound, a solid and tired expression on his dirt covered face. Once finished wrapping his hand he looked to the spilled stones and sighed, using his wrist to wipe away any sweat from under his nose before propping up the wheelbarrow and loading them back in. As he struggled to load up the large stones he couldn’t help but let his mind drift off, finding nothing but sour thoughts to greet him. It’s already been a whole year since his father died, but it still feels unreal. A part of him still couldn’t accept it, even though he saw him pass with his own eyes. The memory off seeing his ill father on his deathbed floated within Luke’s mind, his gaze hardened in silent anger as his grip around another stone grew tight enough to cause a few small droplets of blood to spill out from his bandaged hand. He could feel the familiar warm moisture of his tear in his eyes begin to rise up, but before he would allow them to fall he remembered the last thing his father told him. “I know it’s hard Luke, I know from now on things will be hard for this family, but I know you’ll step up. I know you’ll take care of your mother and sisters, I know you’ll make me proud. You’re my son after all. Stay strong Luke,” he said weakly before raising his now ghostly pale shaking hand to Luke’s head who attempted to hold back his tears with clenched teeth and red eyes, clutching at the bottom of his shirt as his body trembled in sadness. He ruffled his hair with his usual happy grin on his weak and tired face. “And remember to… keep that… smile…” the feeling of his father’s now motionless hand slip from his messy hair made his soul freeze in horror. He stared with wide eyes filled with utter shock as his father’s eyes remained closed, but his smile remained. His heartbroken screams and wails echoed throughout their home for that long, terrible night. Luke clenched his eyes shut as he didn’t want to go any deeper into the memory and slammed the stone into the wheelbarrow with a grunt. It took him a second to calm himself, but with a quick sniffle he wiped away any tears that may have escaped and finished reloading the stones. He gripped the handles of the wheelbarrow, frowning slightly as he saw the dull stains of blood within the wooden handles. With one final breath Luke continued down the dirt path that ran along what was left of his family's land. It took him an hour before he returned to his home, a small house that had been in his family of farmers for generations. He glanced to the stone wall that his father had started before he got sick and couldn’t help but feel a small smile come to his face. He was proud that he was so close to finishing it, his father's final home improvement. With a brief moment of pride he lowered the wheelbarrow by the side of his house and sighed in relief before entering his home. “I’m back, I think I’ll be able to finish this wall by the end of the week. Just a few more runs to the quarry and I’ll… be…” his words drifted off as he close the door and noticed his mother not paying him an ounce of attention, keeping her back turned towards him as she stared out the kitchen window. He frowned with some sadness as she sat at the kitchen table, the same cup of tea she had made this morning remained untouched and now cold. Luke’s frown only deepened when he saw another filled cup on the other side of the table. That was his father’s spot at the table. He cleared his throat and shook his head before forcing a small smile and slowly walking over to his mom. “Mom?” he attempted to softly call for her attention before reaching her side. His heart ached for his mother as she wore the same far off and emotionless look on her face, her once bright and lively face now pale and unnerving. He swallowed any hesitation before gently resting his hand on her shoulder. She jumped slightly before looking to Luke, her pale face instantly switching to a warm smile. Sadly, this warm smile only sent a shiver down Luke’s spine. “Luke! There you are! I’ve been waiting all morning for you,” she stated with a bit of relief before seeing him all dirty. “Now look at what you’ve done, getting dirty before breakfast again. Hurry up and wash up, I’ll set you a plate,” she said before rising from her chair and walking over to the stove with a pot of oatmeal he had made this morning. Luke swallowed his hesitation once more before reaching out to her. “Mom, it’s almost 6pm. I’ve been at the quarry all day,” he said and felt his heart stop for a second as she froze with a wooden bowl in her hand. She stood there frozen for a moment before laying the bowl onto the counter. “Yes, of course it is,” she muttered before giving a nervous chuckle. “I-I just, I…” Luke resisted the urge to break his smile and walked over to her with his false smile holding strong. He rested his hand on her shoulder and led her back to her seat at the table. “It’s okay, we all have our off days,” he said as he helped her sit down, pity for his mother only growing as the sheer look of confusion clear on her face. After making sure she was seated and alright he sighed and began to walk towards the small and narrow hallway that lead to all of their rooms. He felt the urge to enter his room as he passed by it and fall asleep after this tiring day, but he knew he still had a bit to do. Clean up, wash the twins up, make dinner, feed the twins, help his mother and finally put his sisters to bed. He sighed as he ran the list of things to do through his mind, but shrugged it off as he went to open his sisters room. They should be napping, his mother may have her episodes but she surely couldn’t have forgotten about them. Right? Luke’s fears were sadly answered as he walked into the room only to see their cribs empty. Luke’s eyes widen in dread before he bolted back into the kitchen, fear and dread clear on his face. “Mom, where’s Malena and Lily?” he questioned, his voice wavering slightly. His mother looked to him and showed no signs of worry like him. “I… I was planning a picnic… we were going to go down by the small stream where we always go. But I was waiting for you to wake up… wasn’t I?” Luke balled up his fist and clenched his teeth in horror as a horrible feeling washed over him. “Mom there are wolves out there! It’s dangerous! They’ve been getting bolder and bolder and bolder ever since dad-” “STOP! DON’T!” Luke jumped in surprise as his mother screamed for him to stop and running her pale hands through her long, messy black hair with small sliver lines. Luke didn’t want to go this far, but he felt his rage and worry for his sisters well being take over. “He’s gone! He’s been gone for a year now! Just get it through your damn head!” he yelled back in fury. His mother began to fall into a crying mess, sobbing and wailing before rushing past him and down the hall to her room. Luke clicked his tongue in annoyance before spotting his father’s rifle hanging on the wall. Luke gritted his teeth before snatching it from the wall, grabbing a few bullets and bursting from the house. With fear and anger pumping through his veins Luke bolted down the worn out dirt road, his mind a clouded mess of anger, fear and sadness. The safety of his sisters, his father's death, his mother's diminishing sanity. He couldn’t take it anymore! With tears now streaming down his face Luke hurried down the path before breaking off onto another path that lead to the stream where is sisters would hopefully be. Before he could reach the stream though he spotted a pair of familiar faces carrying a few small figures. His eyes widened in shock and felt a burst of energy quicken his pace. “Jack! Sarah!” he shouted in a hoarse voice. The two of his friends spotted Luke and smiled to see their friend, but as Luke neared they could see the fear in his eyes and became quickly worried. “Whoa Luke are you-” Jack never finished as Luke came to a sudden halt before them, leaning forward and resting his hands on his knees as he sucked in air to fill his lungs. “Malena! *gasp* Lilly! *gasp*,” was all he could spit out before glancing up to the two of them. He felt a wave of relief wash over him as he saw both of his sisters in the arms of his friends, safe and unharmed. He would have let out a breath of relief, but he had to gulp in another lungful of air to ease the aching pain of his lungs. Sarah glanced to her brother in worry before back to Luke and kneeling down to let his sister Lily get a closer look. “See, she’s alright. They’re both alright. We found them by the stream crying and alone. They might have also caught a bit of cold since they were both shivering slightly,” she said with a bit of worry as she made sure the blanket around Lily was a secure. Both jack and Sarah noticed the rifle strapped onto their friends back and began to become more concerned. Luke stared at his sister and felt his body relax as she smiled at him, happy to see her brother. Luke fought back a few tears before gently taking her from Sarah and hugging her with as much love as he could. He quickly walked over to Jack and took his sister into his other arm before bringing the two of them into a hug. They both giggled and hugged back before laying their heads against his shoulders, resting their tired heads after a long day. “So,” Luke paused and looked to Jack who wore the same worried expression as his sister. “What the hell happened?” he questioned. Luke looked away, a flash of anger and guilt showing in his expression as he thought of his mother. “I… I’ll explain later,” he said before looking between his sisters and feeling them shiver slightly. “I have to get them home,” he stated before looking back to the two and giving a grateful smile. “Thanks, I owe you guys big time,” he said before parting ways with the concerned siblings and beginning his walk back home. As he carried his two siblings he smiled in relief to see them breathing calmly as they rested their tired heads on his shoulder, trusting him with their well beings. They were safe, but there was still one issue. Luke felt his heart ache in pain as he thought of his mother, a feeling of dread coming over him as he worried what she could possibly do next.
Later that night. By the time he returned home the sun had gone down and the night had taken over. Luckily nothing happened on their way home so that was less of a hassle for him. He opened the front door with a heavy sigh and quickly noticed his mother was not in the kitchen where she would usually be. Briefly he remembered what he had said to her and felt a small frown come to his face. His sister Lily must have awoken and seen this since she reached up and rested her hand onto his left cheek, babbling on in baby language with bright, curious blue eyes. Luke’s smile returned to his face as he looked down to his sister and heard felt Malena do the same with his other cheek before questioning him in more baby talk. He chuckled and adjusted the two before walking to the kitchen table. “Alright, lets get you two something to eat,” he said before preparing them and himself dinner. He left out a plate just in case his mother came out, but he doubted she would eat it. Ever since his father passed she had barely eaten anything, causing her to get much skinnier than she use to be. It was all just so frightening to see her that way. Luke shook it off his mind and continued to take care of his sisters for the night. As the night continued on a nasty storm began to stir, heavy rain battering the house, strong winds and a few distant cracks of lightning. He enjoyed a good storm once and awhile, but he couldn’t get past a sickening feeling in his gut. After feeding and cleaning the two he finally put them down into their cribs. He watched the two fall into a blissful slumber with a happy smile before leaving their room, sighing lightly as he leaned the back of his head against the door. This day sure has been a shit show. With his soft bed on his mind Luke turned to make his way to his room, but paused as he heard a muffled giggle reach his ears. Slowly he turned towards the end of the hallway and noticed a dim light flicker from under his mother’s door frame. It wasn’t to odd for her to be up this late, she’s grown a bit of a habit ever since his father’s death, but he swore he could hear her muffled voice talking. With who though? No one came in, if someone did then he would know. With curiosity and concern Luke silently creeped his way to her door, his bare feet sliding against the old wooden floor. His heart began to pound as a few more muffled giggles could be heard and took a quick breath before reaching her door. Luke knelt down to the floor and pressed his ear against the door, but struggled to actually hear anything. He gritted his teeth in annoyance before noticing the dull light shine through the doors keyhole. He swallowed any hesitation that may have remained before lowering himself down towards the hole and peeking through. Luke felt his heart skip a beat before a wave of dread spilled into his soul. It was his mother sitting alone in her favorite rocking chair, the one his father made for her. She lazily rocked back in forth, the floor creaking slightly from the old floor boards. She wore a pure white night gown that seemed to glow with the aid of a nearby fireplace with weak flames dancing along the burning wood. The thing that caught his eye though was the wide, unnerving smile upon her face while her eyes remained hidden behind her long black hair. He felt a shiver run up his spine as she let out another giggle and seemed to speak in a quiet voice, frustrating and worrying Luke even more as he watched his mother’s sanity crumble before his eyes. His eyes widened even more though as he caught the glint of a small knife hidden in the sleeve of her gown. Slowly she raised the knife close to her chest, her smile spreading the closer it became to her pale flesh. Luke’s heart pounded in fear as she gently rested the tip of the blade at the bottom of her throat and began to gradually apply pressure. He wanted to move, he wanted to shout, to stop her! Yet, he found his body frozen in shock and terror as his mother plunged deeper and deeper into madness. As a dribble of blood ran down her neck a crack of lightning ripped through the air and caused Luke to yelp in surprise. He slapped his hand over his mouth, praying he wasn’t discovered from his slip up. After waiting a few silent seconds he slowly peeked back into the keyhole only to see her chair empty and still. It felt like he sat there for ages, his heart being the only thing he can hear and his body shivering in dread. He needed to leave, he needed to- before he could even take a single step away from the door he was met with a wild, bloodshot eye glaring back at him through the keyhole. Luke shouted out in surprise as he scrambled back from the door before it swung open, nearly hitting him. As he got to his feet he looked back and felt terror grip his heart as his mother stood in the doorway, her slightly bloody knife in her pale right hand and her white gown stained in her crimson blood. What shook Luke the most though was her expression. It was… soft, loving, it was just like his mother before his father died. She stared at him, her smile warm and kind like before. It would have brought warmth to his heart, but her eyes… they weren’t hers. “Luke,” a soft voice escaped her, catching him off guard slightly. “My sweet, little Luke. You’ve been working so hard haven’t you?” she questioned and taking a step towards him yet he didn’t notice, being to confused and shocked by her question. Her smile grew a bit softer as she must have noticed his expression before continuing. “You were right, it still hasn’t settled with me yet. Your… father,” she paused as a small saddned frown briefly appeared onto her face before returning to her warm smile. “I was too heartbroken to accept it, but I was selfish as well. Ignoring my responsibilities and putting them on you. You’ve worked hard Luke,” she declared before taking another step towards him, now only a few feet away as Luke stared up at her with a mixture of sadness and fear. Her words were what he wanted to hear, what he needed to hear for so long, but her eyes. Her eyes wanted blood! He began to tremble as she hugged her bloody knife to her chest and looked down to Luke with a wider smile. “Come to me son, it’s time to rest. I heard your father, he misses us all so much and can’t wait for us to join him. Your father’s waiting for us,” in an instant her warm smile turned demented and lunged forward towards Luke. The frighten child snapped back to his senses just in time to jump back from her attempts to clutch his shirt and bolted down the hallway towards the kitchen, not knowing just how close he was from avoiding her knife as she slashed down to cut him. Luke scrambled into to the kitchen, his breath heavy and his legs trembling as he went for the front door. Before he could tear the door open though his mother’s pale hand forced the door shut and brought the knife down towards Luke. With a scream of terror Luke ducked out of the way and fell back onto the floor before crawling for dear life under the kitchen table. His mother tore the table away to reveal him and lunged for him with a wild shriek. He rolled out of the way and just as his mother tried to recover from her failure he drove his heel into her face, causing her to drop her knife and stay dazed for a moment. In a panic he tried to jumped to his feet, but was forced back to the hard floor before being turned onto his back to see his mother atop of him with a crazed smile. “Mo-” was all he was able to blurt out before a pair of cold hands wrapped around his throat and began to strangle him with no mercy. Luke choked, gagged, struggled and kicked for dear life, but even when he scraped her arms she would not let go, her determination to kill him to great. Tears began to stream from Luke’s eyes as things began to look hopeless and gradually started to give up, the thought of death seeming easier than all of this. Before he could completely let go he heard something that caught his attention. Everything around him began to blur and grow muffled, but there was one sound that was clear and filled his ears. Crying? Who was crying? Who else is here? Who else is in this house? In his clouded mind it finally dawned on him where the crying was coming from. His sisters! They were still here with him, they were in their rooms! Luke felt a small boost of energy as things slowly became clearer and once again started to struggle under her grip. He couldn’t die here! Not now! Not with them here! The fear in his eyes soon became filled with defiance as he gritted his teeth in rage and fought back even harder. He couldn’t leave them alone! Not with her! With the very last amount of energy he had left Luke slipped his legs from under her and drove his heels into her gut, sending her skinny frame tumbling back and releasing her death grip from around his throat. With gasp for air Luke wasted no time and let his body take over as he scrambled to his feet before bolting for the hallway. His mother screamed out for him in rage, but he paid no mind to her as he burst into his sisters room and slammed the door shut. Fear gripped him for a moment as he heard her rapid footsteps race for the door, but with a glance to his right he saw an old wardrobe filled with clothes and toys. Without hesitation he leaped for the wardrobe and gritted his teeth as he pushed it over with a grunt. It crashed to the floor, blocking the door. His mother banged and cursed behind the door in pure anger, demanding for him to open up. Panting heavily, his lungs burning and his throat already bruised, Luke stared at the door as he slowly walked backwards towards his sisters cribs. Both sisters cried out in fear, their terror only growing as they became more and more confused of what was going on. Luke sucked in one last lungful of air before turning to his sisters and picking them up out of their cribs. “Shh, it’s okay. You’re alright, we’re all alright, shhh,” Luke spoke as softly as his raspy voice could, holding them close and bouncing them slightly. He flinched as another savage bang echoed off the door and only sent the twins into a longer crying fit as they clutched to their brother, their cries a plead for it all to stop. He gritted his teeth as he was unable to give them any peace and glared at the door, his anger growing by the second. “Just stop damnit! Get ahold of yourself! This isn’t you!” he shouted towards the door over the crying, his own tears beginning to fall again as his raspy voice began to shake. “Please mom, just stop! We’re you’re children! You love us and we love you! Dad wouldn’t want this, he’d want us to move on and be happy! He’d want us to live! So please just STOP!” his voice cracked towards the end as he struggled to even speaking another word. Though as he gave one last plea to his mother his eyes widen in shock as everything went quiet, save for the terrified infants in his arms. His fear only grew by the second as the silence lingered for what seemed forever, but soon his heart stopped for a moment as she finally spoke. “Love?” she questioned as if it was all a new concept to her. “I...I loved your father… he saved me from myself so many times. No matter what I did he looked past my mistakes and took me in,” she said with happiness before Luke could hear her began to sob. “Every moment with him was heaven, it was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I loved his smile, I loved his voice, I loved his touch,” she sobbed lightly before pausing once again. “Then you came, you came and got in the way!” she hissed in pure disgust, making Luke flinch in surprise from her tone. “We were happy together, I had him all to myself and we were happy! But then I gave birth to you and you got in my way!” she shouted before banging on the door once more. “He was so happy though, so happy to see you. That smile on his face was unlike any smile I’ve seen him have before. I loved him so much that I deluded myself in accepting you, into loving you! It made him happy though, so I suffered through it as he began to drift away from me and towards you!” she spat with rage before smacking the door again. “I hate you! You parasite! You devil! You mistake! You ruined my life! Our life!” she screamed with several more smacks on the door. Luke couldn’t believe what he was hearing, what his mother really thought of him. This couldn’t be true, it was just her delusional mind spouting out this nonsense. Wasn’t it? Luke couldn’t wrap his head around it as he dropped to his knees, his eyes wide while he held his sisters close as they continued to cry. After a minute or two he heard a thumb against the door. “I don’t want you, I want him. The one who makes everything clear. So, I’m going to him. I don’t care what you do, I just don’t want you with us anymore,” she finished before Luke could hear her walk away towards her room and slam the door shut. Luke sat there, shocked, afraid and trembling at what had just happened and what was said. The crying of his sisters snapped him out of his trance and hugged them even tighter, burying his head between theirs and shushing them with a torn voice. It was just them now and he was the only one here to take care of them. Even with his broken heart and mind Luke held back his anger and sadness, focusing solely on the last of his family he had left.

“After that we were basically made orphans. Luckily the family my father had helped out so much in the past, the Williams, took us in. They’re good people, did their best to make us feel welcomed and loved. It should have been a good sign, a new start,” he scoffed as he shook his head and leaned against the wall, looking away towards the city with a heavy frown. “But I just couldn’t get over it all. Instead of a new start I started to push most people away, get into trouble and even try to work myself to death with whatever kind of job I could find around my town. I even began to drift farther from my sisters, the only family I have left,” he said with a regretful tone in his voice. “I could have stayed home, not joined the military and tried my best to be a better brother, but I wanted this to be my new start. Ya know, rise in the ranks and become some legendary soldier,” he laughed in bitter amusement before giving a shrug and gently running a hand over the right side of his bandaged face. “Not as easy as I thought it was,” he chuckled and looked back to her with a small smile. He kept his gaze with her for a moment, his mind feeling a bit lighter after sharing that horrible night. It honestly felt good, though the memory was sour it felt good to finally get it out there. It still a bit odd though with never being this honest with anyone before. His eyes drifted back to her locket with what he could only assume washer daughter. A thought crossed his mind as he recalled her saying she’d stay in the military because she didn’t know anything but fighting before he looked back up to her and pointed to the locket. “Hey listen, I don’t know how things are with you and your daughter now, but if you’re interested I may be able to set you two up in my hometown, Hamberg. It’s a small town in the country, but it has a good community that always has a hand to lend to others. I’m sure you’d be able to find a job easy and it could be a good place for your daughter to grow up. My sisters would definitely take a liking to her," he smiled as he knew they would play the two big sisters. “Besides, we’re famous for our great alcohol. Seeing how you drank last night you’d definitely fit in with everyone at the tavern,” he chuckled before giving a small shrug. “It’s a offer though, up to you if you wanna take it. It’d be a good new start, something I keep messing up,” he finished before awaiting her response. [@Smike]
