The entire body is so black as if to swallow the light. he walks on four (and sometimes two) digitigrade clawed paws, though prefers to fly with its membranous wings. he lacks any sort of eyes, ears, or nose, or any other sort of visible orifice/sensory organ.
“Out of what crypt they crawl, I cannot tell, But every night I see the rubbery things, Black, horned, and slender, with membraneous wings, And tails that bear the bifid barb of hell. They come in legions on the north wind’s swell, With obscene clutch that titillates and stings, Snatching me off on monstrous voyagings To grey worlds hidden deep in nightmare’s well. Over the jagged peaks of Thok they sweep, Heedless of all the cries I try to make, And down the nether pits to that foul lake Where the puffed shoggoths splash in doubtful sleep. But oh! If only they would make some sound, Or wear a face where faces should be found!” - H. P. Lovecraft “Fungi from Yuggoth” (1943) "But Carter preferred to look at them than at his captors, which were indeed shocking and uncouth black things with smooth, oily, whale-like surfaces, unpleasant horns that curved inward toward each other, bat wings whose beating made no sound, ugly prehensile paws, and barbed tails that lashed needlessly and disquietingly. And worst of all, they never spoke or laughed, and never smiled because they had no faces at all to smile with, but only a suggestive blankness where a face ought to be. All they ever did was clutch and fly and tickle; that was the way of night-gaunts." - H. P. lovecraft “The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath” (1943)
Abilities:
Major
Absolute Silence: Richard is simply, incapable of making any sort of sound. There are no orifices for sound to come from within and thus cannot cry out in pain, discomfort, or communicate in any verbal way. In addition, his wings flap silently in all conditions and walking on foot produces no sound as well. Even on normally loud surfaces such as fresh snow or leaves. Extrasensory Perception: Even without a nose, eyes, ears, or any other perceptible sensory organ, they are still able to detect living creatures with great accuracy in their near vicinity. Anything that would normally impair visibility such as heavy rain or darkness seems to have little, if any, effect on his ability to sense the environment as well as creatures around him. He can ‘see’ the terrain and objects as far as a normal human can with detail being lost the further away something is from him. However, heavy rain, fog, darkness, and other similar conditions prove no impairment. In addition, he can sense living creatures within 10 yards of him (9.14m). He can also ‘hear’ conversations at about the same range. He normally cannot determine any difference between other creatures he detects (except general size and shape), but with repeated exposure can eventually recognize specific creatures and individuals from others. This ability to detect creatures is mitigated by barriers to different degrees depending on the type of barrier. Solid barriers such as concrete or thick metal can almost completely negate this sense. With the inhibitor, he can see no more than 30 yards (27.43m). Sensing little detail apart from a thick fog past that. He also has difficulty sensing creatures past 5 yards (4.57m).
Minor
Flight: Having functional wings he is able to fly great distances before needing to rest, even if carrying a few passengers. he is capable of reaching speeds upwards of 80mph (roughly 129kmh) for short distances but otherwise travels around 40mph (roughly 65kmh) With the inhibitor, however, he often feels exhausted when trying to fly. In a pinch he can fly, but not very far and it is too uncomfortable for him to do this regularly. Dexterous barbed tail: Richard has an extremely sharp tipped tail that is capable of piercing through thin metal much less flesh and bone. However, it is coordinated enough to harmlessly tickle victims so as to distract them or prevent them from struggling as he carries them through the air. The Tail can snake up through holes and openings as well as the interstices of metal armor. Richard however prefers to not to use this offensively. Even defensively, he prefers to incapacitate them by tickling than to kill them by slicing or piercing through flesh. Greater strength and durability: Richard has greater strength and durability than the average human. He can easily carry two humans of average size and fly just as effortlessly. He cannot, however, lift something as heavy as a car. his oily whale-like skin is capable of resisting small arms fire as well as blunt attacks. He can also heal relatively fast from wounds and even regenerate limbs in as quick as a few weeks. He is by no means invulnerable though, and really only needs a little more effort than the average human to kill. Self-Sustenance: Fortunately for someone lacking a mouth, Richard has no need to eat and never feels hungry. He still can suffer from fatigue and requires rest, but he gets his energy somehow without needing to absorb nutrients or vitamins from eating and digesting. Telepathy : Richard is capable of mentally communicating with those in his near vicinity. With physical contact he can read and send thoughts between himself and those that are physically touching them (Soft material like cloth or cotton does not impede this, but harder material like metal will). Skills: Richard is practically a ghost, as far as people are concerned, when it comes to sneaking around. Most people rely on both sight and sound to find that which likes to remain unseen, but what happens if that thing makes no sound? And what if, under the cover of darkness, it is practically invisible as well? Under optimal conditions, Richard can be a very hard man to find. With his unnatural senses, he is also adept at tracking and hunting. Lastly, due to his lack of… well, capacity to make any sound, never mind a voice, he has learned some alternative methods of communication such as ESL, Braille, and interestingly enough, Semaphore. Equipment: Nothing. Though his physical shell may be restricted, he is free to wander the blank canvas that is his thoughts. Preferring to be a bit philosophical in his free time, his mind requires no tools or equipment but the ability and willingness to think. Biography: Richard’s troubles began at birth. Right away people could tell he was different, being born without a face and a black rubbery skin. But otherwise normal. It was quite a mystery as his parents were normal humans with no fantastical trait whatsoever. It would not be far off the mark to say Richard had a strained relationship with his parents that only became harder and harder to maintain as he slowly became less and less human as he aged. By one his tailbone began to extend slowly as his hands morphed into paws bearing claws. By three he sprouted horns. By five he adopted a quadrupedal stance. By seven, his wings fully formed and he neared the end of his metamorphosis, but began to grow larger at a greater rate. Eventually reaching his current height at around 19 years of age. Given his barely human appearance he led a very abnormal life, even before the Black Sabbath. His parents were distant, he had few friends to share memories with (and even those that were his ‘friends’ were not very close with him) and often spent his time alone being largely shunned by society. But In spite of this, he was a pretty nice guy. He was patient, often forgave those that bothered him and rarely acted in anger. He disliked confrontation, and was friendly to those around him. He felt upset or angry from time to time, but usually he is able to bottle this emotion before he acts upon it. Little of this changed through the years, even after that dark day. Even after Society declared him a threat. Even as his ‘friends’ left him. Even as his family disowned him. In the end, all he had was himself. When he was forced to dwell in the compounds, he left his past behind him. Only holding on to his name, though he preferred to by referred by his nickname ‘Night-Gaunt’. Something he was called once, and he took a liking to it. A beastly name for someone who barely resembles a human. It seemed like a good fit to him. Though he lost his physical freedom, at least his mind could wander. Though his body was confined, his thoughts were free. And in this small freedom he finds contentment. In this contentment he finds peace. In this peace, he can quell his anger. For even the kindest of souls can explode in a violent fury. And his anger is something he did not like. The last time he felt it, he suppressed it. Bottling the feeling deep within himself. Hoping it would never surface again. It is said that wise men only fear three things. The sea in a storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man. Though I suppose, in this case, it would be the anger of a gentle beast.
