Story's pretty typical.

Grew up in Brooklyn, had a life, not too easy, not too hard.  He made his friends, got involved in physical stuff, basketball, amatuer parkour, geocaching and was lucky enough to stay away from the heavy and dark stuff that other kids had to deal with.  Thankfully his parents, his little brother, they all kept him on the straight and narrow.  He pretty much did everything he was supposed to do.  Even decided to get into computers.  Not exactly his passion but he understood them well enough and he was told pretty quick that if you know computers, you're practically guaranteed a job when you graduate.  He even managed to get himself a scholarship by playing basket ball. Things always seemed to go his way.

And yet, it wasn't enough.

Maybe his mid life crisis hit a little early.  He wanted to kind of get away from it all, do something challenging, take him away from his comfort zone and his little life of middle of the road.  He applied to international schools, figuring that going to a different part of the world would help break his mold a little bit. See if he can find himself, see what he really wanted.  His scholarship really helped with his acceptance, and a couple courses of Rosetta Stone later, he found himself at KIU.  Culture shock was an understatement.  He essentially had to start his life over.  Fair enough.  If he could make it here, he could make it anywhere.
