It was the most difficult on the first day, just like the first week in boot-camp or the first engagement in the jungle. It didn't help that ol' Mugsy's stomach couldn't handle the completely unfamiliar diet on the first day, but the old grunt had had his fair share of those moments back during the war. It was bad, but not enough to stop him for long, and after a day his biggest issue was getting used to life behind the safety of walls. That, and conversing with the new people. All of this made Alexander more than happy to get his hands on something solid to do. And as it were the case, he was assigned with Jack his fellow bunk-mate to clean the men's showers, sometimes with one of the younger girls who had their heads shaven clean. Alexander enjoyed it. Cleaning was something he enjoyed doing, and had ever since Judith taught him it didn't have to be a chore. And then it was a good excuse to not staying too close to either Jack or Amelia if he didn't want to talk, he could always excuse himself and limp off to clean some other part of the showers. All in all, Alexander enjoyed the routines and feeling useful again. Even if he now mostly used his crutches and not the self-made pegleg. Over the next couple of days Alexander was checked on by Tesla, alongside Thalia, Alexander was thankful for Shears giving the old man a much needed hair-cut besides the shaving he had already done in the showers and trimming it to a reasonable lenght, but most importantly to Mugsy was when Atticus came to do as good Catholic priests do. Alexander hadn't prayed in this way for years. It felt nice, it felt normal. He prayed for many different things; thanking for their food, their safety, the safety of his friends, and forgiveness. For what he prayed for forgiveness for, he didn't say, but God already knew that. And he needed that, as he grew weary of the interviews Gunny informed them of. What would they ask him? What would he tell them? On the fourth day Alexander had once again helped cleaning the men's showers as best he could, limping around on one leg and two crutches. They were a whole lot better than what he used before, less strainous on his tired, old bones. Then it was breakfast, a heavenly cup of coffee, and another day of quarantine. Alexander had been sitting alone at a table for his breakfast, just sitting and enjoying a moment of silence for himself. Nobody seemed to be nagging him for the moment, and he had the time and energy to not fear of being mauled to death by a walker, so he enjoyed every second of it. When Panama asked anyone if they'd want to play cards, Alexander was tempted to join in, but refrained from doing so. He still didn't like him after the whole speech about them "having had it easy", and it would take a while longer for him to let it slide. However, as the loud-mouthed Wayne mentioned the video he put on to be of the Martins and he began to recognize one of the voices, Alexander took notice. He pushed himself out of his chair and humped over to the tv on his crutches, for a moment just standing there and staring at the tv-screen. Thana. Thana and Gavin. Alexander hadn't seen their faces for so long; Gavin's face he last saw cold, emotionless and dead after sacrificing himself in Eden; Thana when she left them in the house to search for supplies, never to return. And they were smiling. Alexander made his way over to the couch were Manny was sitting and watching as well, leaning on the couch and placing a hand on Manny's shoulder. Nigel "Hadrian" was no stranger to food-poisoning or pain in general, having experiened both over the years since Hades conquered the world. But Over the course of the two first days, he still had trouble with eating or eating, and moving in any manner a tad too quickly made his stomach as uneasy as the Pillars of Hercules. But on the third day, Nigel was feeling a lot better and could easily stand up without holding his belly. Wayne's problems were clearly not over though, and Nigel was more often than not holding his nose when in their bedroom. A gas mask would have been nice, the smell of burning pigs truly were demoralizing for the enemy, but he'd manage. Nigel wasn't overjoyed when he was assigned to cleaning-duty in the female bedrooms, but he knew and understood that this was the labours put onto them as payment for their services, and he obliged. It had less to do with him working alongside Tatiana, and more with the fact he wasn't too comfortable cleaning up the bedrooms where the ladies had slept. It was odd, one would think the End of the World would make one desensitized to such things, but the normality of strong, protective walls was equally odd like that. Nigel however did as he was told, and tried to clean up their bedrooms to the best of his abilities, though he and Tatiana rarely exchanged words. Nigel couldn't blame her, he was a stranger to her, and she was clearly dealing with a titanic boulder on her shoulders. The image of Tatiana's scars on her back was still very much burned into his mind, more so thanks to his suspicions of what caused them. He shuddered at the thought, but tried to hide it from her. Boiling oil was one grusome, yet effective way to fight off a besieging army, one could say. It was the fourth day now, and Nigel could be found sitting in a quiet corner and reading a book. Sitting in the same area and doing the same as Nigel was Amelia, who Nigel had worked with a few times as she was the replacement for Tatiana, though Nigel couldn't say they had spoken much. He enjoyed the peace and quiet though, as he could finally read a book. After so many days just sitting in front of the tv and simply watching it, Nigel "Hadrian" had gotten tired of old vhs-movies with commentary provided by Hank and Wayne. In the end Nigel had asked for something to read, and Panama had in true Maldonado-Wright fashion brought Nigel a book. "The Decline and Fall of The Roman Empire". At first Nigel "Hadrian" had sighed at the obvious joked being pulled on him, but at this point he was just happy to read something that didn't involve Lazy-Town. So now Nigel was sitting in said corner and reading quietly through a book as much about the Fall of Rome as a history of how to percieve the Fall of Rome. Even if it was old news, it was better than watching paint dry. Nigel too looked up once the video was put on the TV. He recognized a few of the people on the Martin's video, except for the tall man playing the guitar. The lady doing the singing looked familiar to Nigel, though he had trouble placing her face somewhere…was she the older version of the girl in the pictures he found with the Martins family? Nigel looked at Wayne and rolled his eyes at his drink-buying comment, wondering what sort of hornet's nest he would be opening today. One of the old guys, Alexander his name was Nigel thought, said something about him not knowing she could sing. Nigel could agree, though he was not a country-guy himself. But he could enjoy it nonetheless, as the others did.
