Kassandra ushered the children into the gym, where there were several training dummies set up. The dummies had been magicproofed, fireproofed, any other "proof" they could think of while they were creating them.

"Now, let's begin. My name is Ms. Keigwan, and I do apologize for my lateness. You'll have a brand new homeroom teacher tomorrow. What today will be is a display of your powers. I have it on paper, but I would like to see with my own eyes what you can do." 

To start with, she demonstrated her own magic, and conjured an illusion of a swimming, singing mermaid floating among the students. They could see and hear her, and even touch something vaguely solid. Once they'd gotten the gist, she dropped the illusion and smiled. 

"So, with whoever wants to start, please give me your first name, and then go ahead and turn your skills onto the dummy there."
